I am polishing my mom's 2001 Jaguar XK8 (she bought it used a few years ago). I noticed some strange things with the paintwork and I am wondering if there was a re spray or something. Tell me what you think. First picture: I'm not sure what this is. It's hard to see. It looks like a piece of paint is off-color. I'm not too worried about this because it isn't too noticeable. Second picture: Difference color in bumper. The bumper has a much harder clearcoat which I can't even get swirls out with my most aggressive combo (I only have a PC). Rest of the pictures: Strange bubbling in rocker panels. This is on the entire sufrace of both panels. Could I fix this with a wet sanding? Also, all of the paint has pretty bad orange peel, much worse than typical BMW orange peel. note: for some reason, the pictures are upside-down. Thanks.:worship2:
Its not strange to find bumpers looking a little different than the body as the paint can show differently on plastic vs steel. As for the bubbling on the rockers, its factory chip guard that is in the paint. You may want to leave that alone. What polish / pads are you using on the bumper?
I'm using menzerna IP with an orange pad. I made a few passes and the swirls are still there. It's strange because I only had to use a white pad and 805RD on the hood to get rid of them.
be careful and make sure you do a wipedown wit h50% ISA alcohol. you may just be filling in the swirls on the hood when you think you are actually taking them out...
Paint on bumpers on certain cars seems to be different than paint on the rest of the body. Also, keep in mind that there will always be more dirt on the bumpers, which means more/deeper marring when washing, which in turn means being much more difficult to get marr free.
Bumpers are very hard to match because they have a paint additive that makes the paint more flexible for the plastic. I have heard that there are different ones that make them less noticeable but usually the paint has to be remixed to be a good match.
