Winter wax/sealant?

What are you guys/gals planning to use this winter (if applicable!) for paint protection over the winter? In the past, I have used Klasse AIO/SG and it has worked well for me.

 

I use Collinte, however if what you use works for you why change.

 

I plan to use Collinite or Meg's #16 for this winter. Of course, California winters really aren't harsh compared to just about every other state and Canada.

 

I'd do Collinite as well. 845 is super easy to apply in case you need to reapp and lasts months.

I agree that Meg's #16 or Collinite (915) both make it through the winter pretty well. Combine them with ONR washes in the garage and you're good to go.

 

I live in the North East of the US..we get some harsh winters...the roads are covered in salt and chemical de icers....and I have tried many products to see what will keep the paint protected best for winter....

First you should use a sealant that is very durable (your choice)...the sealant will actually crosslink to the paint..meaning bond to the polymers in the paint....2 coats of the sealant to ensure you have all areas covered....

then after a day or so after the sealant has cured..apply a durable wax...(your choice)....wax does not crosslink to paint..it just sticks to it..so its your sacrifical barrier ..that takes the beating of salt and road grime....

the underlaying sealant is what you want to protect your paint and wax to take the beating....


Now the products I use are DG 501 to clean the paint to ensure its deep cleaned down to the micro pore level....then I use DG 105 x 2 letting each layer cure off before applying another to ensure i have full coverage....

after the sealant has cured..i use collinite ..either 915 or the 885 fleetwax...I do 2 layers of these also....a day apart......

Rims get the same treatment...


Now ..for washing I just use the rinse water at the wand wash....no soap since the stuff they use is very strong and can strip wax....I just rinse the truck off and all the grime just washes off no problem....this year I got some ONR..so after the rinse I will ONR the truck and then rinse again.....then wipe down and use AW if not to cold out


I use this method every fall andI have had super results..I do in Oct..and come May I still have a nice glossy paint thats beading very well.....


the sealants of choice for this process would be

Klasse AIO and Glaze combo

Zaino Z2 or Z5 pro

DG 105

I have used them all for winter and they hold up no problem....

The Collinite will hold up a bit better than the Meg's #16....I tried the 16 and the Colly held up much better and cleaned up better with just a rinse...

Nice. I have some 845, will have to get the DG 105.

 

I would use a colly paste over the 845 IW for winter.....the 845 IW is a great wax..but to me the pastes seem to just hold up much better during winter....


remember ...products work different in different geographical areas of the US....some products work great in Florida..Texas..Cal....but they may not work well in the snow belt areas...salt is a killer on any product...and paint..so you want the bast to protect any salt action to the finish..all it takes is a chip to get salt action going and next thing you have a rust bloom...

I am probably going for DG105 or Z2 as a sealant and top it with Collinite 476.

LoL, man the possibilities are endless for me when it comes to sealants and waxes.

Looks like I'll have to do a lot of experimenting across different family vehicles.

 

from new york here.. last winter i used Klasse AIO x 1 then Klasse HGSG x 2, then 3M Show car paste wax x 2. It held up through the whole winter 'til spring. THe shine, gloss, and protection was very good IMO. Just hose off the debris in the car at a local do it yourself carwash before i discovered ONR. THis coming winter will be full of ONR washes for me.

 

This year I will be using 501 let cure then add some FK 1000p Hi Temp Wax x2. The first wash after the Hi Temp I will add a carnauba just for that lil extra. For maintaing I will ONR was, then finish with OCW or DG AW.

Is there a concensus on which collinite wax is the best? There are a few mentioned here....

 

I have a better policy, my car gets a nice thick, velvet lined car cover as a sealant, and is put away for the winter!!! THen I can just drive the beater winter If anything htough, as a sealant for the winter I use zaino

 

Last winter the Klasse Twins worked well for me but KSG was a bit of a pain; I'm not sold on the effectiveness of the WOWO method for KSG and letting it haze before removing is PITA. This winter I'll be using the DG 601/105 combo...I may pick up some DG 501 a la Al-53.

 

any of the colly pastes are good winter waxes...they are all very durable...and will handle a winter no problem...the pastes I have used are

915

476s

885

these are all pastes and will all hold up for winter no problem...just get 2 coats on to ensy=ure coverage....and do not worry about trim staining as these will not stain trim..I use it right over the trim
