K basically I stopped early tonight because I am so . I started using the porter cable for the first time on my car tonight. I have used it on my boat with the white pads that came with the polisher and everything worked great. Tonight I tried using Menzerna SIP with a 5 inch backing plate and a 5.5 inch LC orange pad. I just finished the hood and it took me a good hour. I just cannot stop it from bouncing and control it. I use the xmt pad conditioner before hand and I am definitely using enough product. When I get finished with a pass the porter cable is over heating like crazy. I barely apply any pressure at all and the pads are not getting hot. I know I am using a lot of product but by the time I am done spreading it around on speed 3 it dries out on me. If I try to use more product the it just slings around like crazy. The only thing I could think of is the the counterweight says "5 inch pads only" and I am running 5.5 inch pads which would set the harmonics off. any suggestions opinions. Thanks
Couple things that come to mind, your speed setting is too low, need it to be at 6 for any type of correction, the orange pad sometimes does caus hopping but usally on a rotary though. I dont see how it is drying out so quickly, plus moving so slow it is probably gumming and causing the hopping. With it getting very hot you needa large gauge extension cord not a small cheap one or it will cause it to over heat.
I put it on 3 just to spread it around and then I turn it up to 6. I figured out I was not using enough product. I am using more to prevent bouncing but I am just slinging it everywhere. It seems like I cannot find a compromise between not enough and too much.
Try a QD instead of the pad conditioner. I had a problem with the product flinging tiny balls of product. AL suggested a QD over the pad conditioner. Worked great! :thumb:

A mist of water would be a better type of pad primer. With Menzerna I have never needed to prime pad, only with the product it self.
QD's could have silicone in it which can give you problems with Menzerna. Water is definitely better, if you need anything at all. I ran into a similar problem with a car where everything I used dried up instantly. Never was able to figure out what it was, or get anything to work. Something was in or on the paint and wouldnt let the polishes work correctly. That might be your problem here. Try a different polish.
Haha, hopefully your washer doesn't weld itself to the plate and PC like mine did :shakehead: The hopping might also be caused by uneven pressure on the PC. Thats what I noticed a lot when I polish sometimes. It usually takes me 5 min to get used to the machine everytime I polish
My Porter Cable originally comes with (5 inch only) counterweight, but the original pad was a 6.5 inch...does that throw the harmonics off? Do I need a 6 inch counterweight if I want to stay with using the 6.5 inch foam pads? Thanks
