It seems we have a thread for everything else so I thought it would be fun to start a wine collecting thread.. So Ill start, im trying to slowley start a collection, I have a few wines (ok fine 3) that are cellared and ready to be stored. One being a 05 burgundy (said to be the best vintage in over 100 years).. so im really excited about wine, im working on my wset leve 1 right now and hope to keep going up to level 4 or 5. Its fun so far and I will conitune to do it as long as they stay fun.. so the point of this thread is to discuss tasting notes, great vintages, good deals, help other find what they are looking for and just discuss wine... I hope there are other on here who love wine as much as I do...
Good thread. I don't know about collecting wine, but I love port. I am not sure why, but a good glass of port in the evening just hits the spot. Good luck with the collection! Do we get pics of this 05 Burgundy?
I love port as well. Im a huge port drinker.so which is your fav? as for the 05 burgundy, I will have to dig it up. I hid it from myself so i would not drink it lol... I have to admit I did buy the least expensive one. It was only 50bucls. I would love to splurge on a 200 buck bottle but im not there in my collecting yet... so yeah, which ports are at the top of your list?
Right now I am drinking a mission hill ice wine. It is pretty good, and was $32 with employee discount at a store where my buddy works. My favorite port comes with a wooden box. I think it is Tawny (sp) ?? I will look for you tomorrow. It is good stuff. I really like this mission hill ice wine. I will take a picture of it for you. I had a glass at Salt Lik a few months ago and I fell in love. Too bad that 2 glasses at salt lik cost the same as the bottle. Mission Hill is a pretty good winery my dad took me there wayyy before i was legal to drink, so I didnt get to sample the wines, but you do learn a lot about wines.
mission hill is one of my fav winery's to visit. I did the tour there.. it was awsome. If you are even in kelowana its worth checking out. Ohh and the restreant they have there is fantastic, you eat the most wonderfull food, dink a wonderfull wine nad look over the lake. Its heaven, My dad literly had to pry me away.... whata place to vist. There ice wine is great, but to be honest there late harvest are a little better. I know its weird but I have found that allowifn the grape to warm up past -8C gives it a diffrent tatse. I am looking at going tothe big wine festival they have in kelowna.. it all depends on how it lines up with meadowbrook.. but goo choice... ohh and those pics tou requested.. so here are the 3 bottles Ihave in my collection, its modest but I have a few years to make it grown and here is tonights drink, yeah i nkow its a rose, im gonna take some slack for that but im conviced people will come around to rose, there are some great ones at a not so stupid price. The one I am having tonight is very crisp and clean. Its a great glass
myself and pat cannotbe the only ones who drink wine. I know carlos dosent but thats just because he is weird... haaha just kiding, well he is actually weird but still..... so any other wine drinkers/collectors?
haha the story of my life.. i have learned the trick is to pick up more then a few at one time and hide half.... so no other wine collections, im really shocked by this... ohh well I will post with sneek and p1et...
Well I honestly don't know anything about wine, besides that I've learned that expensive wine is not nesesarly the best wine...Calgarydetail had edumacated me on wine...well he's going to  I purchased wine here and there and I always get the most expensive and everytime I do this I don't like it so I give it to the wife to use it in the kitchen. Well I grew up beleavin that you get what you pay for but wine is the exeption to the rule :shakehead: Calgarydetail tells me that drinkin expensive wines aquires some kind of taste for it but after trying a few I can understand what he's talking about....oh and when I say expensive I mean in the $50 to $100 range...that may not be expensive to some of you but for someone like me who dosen't have a clue about wine that's expensive
There are some really good wines for cheap. I got a really good wine for $9.99 (employee discount) I think it only cost $16.00 regularly though. It was from Australia i think.
I agree with you pat. Although i am kinda a wine snob I know exactly what you mean. you do not have to spend 200 on a bottle to make it good... heck I have had $200 bottles that have oxidized and gone bad... my wset1 teacher put it best. There are not bad wines, only bad bottles and bad occasions And dont worry carlos, I have been sampling wine all week (ok so perhaps not but still) to find the perfect combo... im having trouble... im thinking a sovingien (sp) blanc
I have a small collection of liquors some very old some collectors editions, I drink beer though, my wife drinks wine, as they say it's an acquired taste, and I don't have it yet. Cognac on the other hand, with a cuban in the first, that's a combo that agrees with me.
I just took a look at this thread and thought I should add my 2 cents. I live in Wine Country, ie The Okanagan and as CalgaryDetail has already noted the wine industry is big and growing rapidly. Kelowna has several wineries but there are many many more to the south around Penticton, Naramata, Oliver, Osoyoos etc. I moved here almost 6 years ago and there were about 40 wineries in "the valley". There are well over 100 now not to mention just grape growers etc. So, yes we collect wine too but much of it is wine we have had made locally and a fair amount from various of our local favourite wineries. We frquently have about 100 bottles on hand but many enthusiasts here make our stock look pretty small. We actually prefer Late Harvest over ice wine just because it is not quite so sweet. And often the temps don't get cold enough for the grapes to be right for ice wine, hence its price and availability. One thing to keep in mind about buying expensive wines that you probably allready know is that the reds have to age some before they taste their best. We have many times tried a young red wine and have found it tasted bitter etc. But if you hold on to that wine for a good year or more it will be much better. Whites are much better very early. I'm definitely no expert and don't consider myself all that knowledgeable but living here a little bit rubs off. Its a very interesting subject and with all things such as wine, detailing etc, the more you learn, the more you realize how much more there is to learn. And i agree, the price doesn't guarantee that the wine will be good. Australia and Chile make some great wines too and frequently very affordable. A good $20 -$30 wine is very enjoyable especially if consumed with the right meal. Oh ya, we like Port too and bottle our own from a local maker fortified with brandy of course. Nothing better in the winter after dinner than a nice glass of Port and a good size chunk of dark chocolate. Good thread you started. :thumb:
I have just a few bottles that are aging in my wine fridge...a few bordeauxs, cdps, and a couple california reds. I add a bottle every so often, but mostly consume less expensive wines...saving the better bottles for some occasion, or simply because they're not yet aged long enough. My '03 Pavie Decesse has a recommend drink date of something like 2010 - 2025.
good news on the wine front, after waiting for over 6 months Poplar grove has released there 05 Cab Franc. I have never hd this howevr my dad asked me 6 months ago to make sure I get 2 cases when it becomes available... well its available. Also I learned that I like white wine, crazy me for not liking it all this time. The wine course im in (wset 1) has stasting everyweek, last week was white. Ialso found out reislings age really really well.. 20+ years if you want. So im figuring out which one i want to buy a case of to throw int he cellar for a decade... decsions decsions well tonight is red... i am very very very excited, i can start to look at reds to cellar as well
That's just interesting...Calgary you get exited about wine just as much as Waxes..:shead: huh..intereting....so do I get a taste too :beg:
dare I say it, I get more excited obout wine.. which tells you how muhc I love it. I get really really excited over wax as you have seen, I love wine even more.... mmm wine...as for the wine, well it will prob get cellared for a few years. Im sure we will open 1 bottle as a family (6 of us so we go through a bottle quickly) and then throw the rest in the cellar... its still young so it will need some time to age....which reminds me i need to pick up the 05's from burgandy and bordaux. they are said to be great vintages but mmm wine...ohh carlos did you get a chance to try either of those wines you have?
carlos your looking at this the wrong way, you have the idea that yo need cheese to go with wine... you should be enjoying the food with wine, the wine will taste better and so will the food..... but you dont need cheese you can have a glass with dinner... it will actully help with digestion ohh and that reisling with hold its own, you could drink it by itself and it will still be good... trust me i have gone through a few bottles :thumb:
Yea but at the little get together on the golf course and all the wine and cheese I had I don't think I can drink wine by it's self any more....so I really need to pick up some cheese..I was going to pick some up today but wife wanted to look at a house or two or three :shakehead:
