I recently got a virus on my computer, some spyware bs...computer was left on all night, and next thing I know I've got 38 windows open, saying it's infected...I run Norton 360, which I purchased online recently, subscription renewal. Anyway, it detected some, but not all...I don't like Norton products anymore, they just make them more and more complicated to use. So I canceled it for a refund.... Now am looking to get something that will work well (that is remove the virus for sure), and won't slow down PC performance like Norton... Any thoughts? What do you guys use, and how do you like it? I'm looking at Kaspersky Internet security 7.0. It suppose to work well with hourly updates, and won't slow down PC like others... Any experience with it anyone? I'm trying their trial version right now, to see if it will remove the virus.
Personally, I have had very good luck with Norton but the most recent update has been a SERIOUS memory hog. The startup time is a lot slower and I can tell that the entire PC runs slower when it's running in the background. But it's done a BANG UP job of catching all the stupid malware and viruses that try to infect my machine, so it's been worth it. In regards to the current state of your machine, I would suggest backing up all your information and just redoing the whole thing. Start fresh!
Norton killed the performance on both my machines, I use Windows Onecare now. One price covers 3 computers.

AVG user here, every once in awhile I run Spybot and ad-aware and I've been problem free for years... Pete
Personally, I like NOD32 by Eset. If you need to get back up and running before replacing your anti-virus software, try using Trend Micro's online scan Trend Micro HouseCall - Free Online Virus and Spyware Scan - Trend Micro USA . Your best bet is to turn off system restore before you start cleaning, and do not re-enable it until you are clean. Then make sure you have the latest security updates installed.
I've used AVG for the past couple of years with no problem. I recently found a receipt for Nortons 360 my wife bought for her laptop over a year ago so I went to Nortons and downloaded it and found it still had 352 days left on the subscription. I used it for 3 days and my computers speed was literally cut in half while it was on there and I'm running an Intel dou core processor with 2 gigs of ram! I uninstalled it and reinstalled AVG and my performance was instantly restored. 360 is a resource hog and I didn't like it. AVG detected a threat last night on a web site and handled it perfectly. AVG is the way to go and you shouldn't have any problems with it. Good luck! filehippo.com - Download Free Software
Ditto. Been using AVG ( the free version no less) for years and been happy with it so far. I also use Spybot S&D along with Lavasofts's Ad-Aware and Firefox with the NoScript extension to keep the ole pc running clean. I can't say that its 100% impervious to everything but the rig has been running clean for years.
Same here. AVG anti spyware, AVG anti virus, and Super anti spyware, all free. Also Windows Defender, another freebie. Zero problems on four computers for over two years. Norton was a joke and turned a rabbit computer into a tortoise while McAffee missed things the free protection caught. I'll not pay those outrageous prices ever again.
I've been using Kaspersky Internet Security. I downloaded the trial from their website and got the keys from this site kaspersky KAV(KEY) kasperskyKIS(KEY) . Delete all the previous keys that don't work, before you add a new key. Make sure it's named KIS7. If you want more info you can PM me . I used to use Trend Micro Internet Seceurity, but didn't like the internet disconnecting and connecting again everytime it updates, Kaspersky doesn't do that
You could use AVG (Grisoft) or ThreatFire for AV. Spybot for Spyware. I just gave up on all of it and switched to a Mac back in October. I'm a sys admin and I deal with this stuff on a regular basis and it drives me up a damn wall.
You can download Windows Defender for free ...or at least it used to be free and it's better than anything else I've tried including spybot.
