Hey everyone.. as you all know I just started into detailing and ive learned alot from you guys. You guys always gave me good advice and tips on how to improve my work that is why I like it here. Im a member of another local forum mostly Nissan 240sx owners and ive posted my detailing thread there also and there are all new to it and im trying as best as I can to share my knowledge but unfortunately there is one guy who claims to be knowledgeable and expert on detailing. He said that he works at a dealership where he details for a living and can do this and that... He mentioned alot of stuff that is half right and trying to crash my thread and make me look bad.. I just stay quiet because i dont want to shut anyone up but he is really annoying me now..here is his post:

If you want to read the whole thread here is the link: My Car Detailing arsenal and collection thread - Import FanatiX Car Club

Here is all the quotes i collected from the thread that he said...

Let him talk as i can see most of it is coming from his ass which im sure is were his head is located. secret dealer products hehehe whatever this is why it is important to study what is in the product and how it works when you understand that then you buy what is efective no mater if its off the shelf or out of a van. nice stash by the way. you got top products as far as i can see.

best way to get rid of swirls is by polishing by hand???

Boy that fellow is really full of himself is he not? The only thing that I would consider a relavent comment is the second to last quoted sentence about taking an hour to do one panel. I am sure that you are taking your time (and that is good) but most likely it is true that it does not take an hour to do one panel. The rest of the read is pure bull crap.

This guy knows all the answers so there isn't any point in trying to change him or argue with him. The very fact that paint correction should be done only by hand is rediculous. To be honest my advise is to keep posting and showing your results the best that you can with pictures. You will soon seperate the wheat from the chaff. Your work and knowledge of detailing and products that you use will be your shield in this case.

When he posts his thread, ask him what dealer he works so you can be sure that nobody you know gets a car washed at that dealer.

For one since I am a service manager at a dealership they buy cheap stuff in bulk, thats one reason not to pay attention to this clown and the second reason from just skimming over all his bs is how the hell does he do proper paint corretion in three hours and then adds in wet sanding and three stage polishing. Plus I want to know how he removes swirls by hand polishing, he has to be using a glaze, that would be the only way to remove the swirls. Just gain some knowledge here and then oneday you can pick his detail apart and ask certain questions to that you know the answer. Ask him if he has heard of Menzerna, Swissvax, P21S, etc., and if he hasn't you know that you have more knowledge than him and he just wants to make an ass out of himself.

ignore him, anything you post he'll just "one-up" you because he has to seem better or faster than everyone else in his eyes. There is no point in putting down your work (which looks great, BTW), just to make his point of how he thinks he can do it better, faster and cheaper. I've seen these types before, and he'd probably get offended if you kindly asked him to butt out of your threads. So, I would just ignore him.

1 Hour is by no means bonkers. I am not sure if I spend 1 hour per panel, but with a DA it is probably 100% possible. I am betting this guy just uses a rotary and then glazes things over. Thats how most dealers do it. I think the best thing to do is just let him make an ass of himself. A lot of people go by and just think that they are the best at everything. I had some guy tell me that 3000RPM was the best speed to use. :p Seems a bit dangerous, but I would just let him believe what he wants to believe.

Funny thing is that there will always be a hater/basher/critic. No matter what you post there will always be one person/member that will have something smart to say.

I don't know, I grew up with many rules and one I remember clear is if yo have nothing nice to say don't say anything.

Some people just can't accept and compliment on others hard work they feel they have to put others down to make them selves feel better  I honestly don't understand people like that but you know what you keep doing your thing and like the others have said ignore him. Always be positive and don't let others put you down, there are many haters in this world but the world would be a better place if we stop and see the good in people then focus on the negative...well just my opinion.

Oh what ever you do, don't stoop to his level.

After reading this, my basic conclusion is he feels inferior to you and since you have a working knowledge of detailing, you have entered into his domain and he feels threatened, hence the put downs. Stay away from him as he will only pull you down. The other members will see his without merit comments and eventually put him in his place. Good luck.

    Black325i=JERK 25to 40 cars per day? 12000 so far?

You gave him too much info to work with. All those new products, you look like a newbie looking for approval.

Just back off a bit and he will show himself for what he is. That site doesn't have many that know much about detailing.

See if you can get him to visit here and we'll :spank: a good one!

Good luck, I love detailing too, just can't get 25-40 cars done a day by hand yet:gasp:

I agree! Two things came to mind while I was reading this. First was something my father would always say..."never let them get your goat" :giggle: which means.... don't let him know he pisses you off :shakehead:
Second he is like the guys that always talk about the .... ahhh.... tail they are getting when the are infact getting none. WHATEVER! Leave this ponk a lone! He is all talk!
Do they have an ignore list on this forum, if not just do your best to ignore him! :thumb:

I agree... I wonder if he's calling glazing polishing? He talks about 2 step buffing and then polishing, what's that about? At first I thought maybe he was saying he only used a buffer for compounding, but then, what's the 2nd step in buffing? I think the "polishing" part is where he hides the defects.

    Hello,

I'll try and reply to each of his replies so you can see how you may be able to respond.

My reply would be that since when does "more mean better"? Does a shelf full of this and that make someone a better detailer? Obviously not.

I've got news for this guy. Many of the OTC products are designed and created by many of the very same companies that dealers use.

There are only a handful of RAW material companies in the USA and from those few a slightly larger number of companies do the manufacturing of detailing products and from them a very large number of companies PRIVATE label their products.

Body shops use all sorts of pads, both foam and wool. A waffle pad is no more notorious for leaving swirl marks behind than a blended wool pad. Does he know anything about poly blend wool and also lambs wool pads?

Wool pads do the most cutting, not foam. Wool pads though run cooler and are actually safer than a foam cutting pad. Also foam pads CAN and DO leave swirl marks behind. A fine finishing pad and a fine polish is needed for final finishing work.

Remove swirls marks by hand? That's ridiculous. If you can remove swirls marks, as in buffer swirls, by hand then would it not be possible to also put swirls in by hand?? See the contradiction there?

Your hand alone cannot generate enough heat and friction to remove swirls and scratches, nor can an orbital in many cases. He may be confusing halo-scratches with buffer marks or swirls. Swirls are micro scratches and are caused from the operator not finishing out their work properly. Halo scratches (or marring) are caused from ordinary washing and drying and normal wear and tear. They don't come out easily, especially by hand.

A machine buffing will ALWAYS give better results than by hand because again your hand cannot generate enough heat and friction to properly level paint down. It is when paint is leveled down that it gives off its best appearance. Your hand cannot burnish the paint toa high gloss.

Also putting polish on by hand then buffing it is counter productive to how polishes are designed. If he is using a product that states to apply it by hand then buff it off then HE is using OLD technology. If you apply a polish by hand , allow it to dry and then buff it off you're then buffing nothing but dust and abrasives into the paint as most likely the carrier agents/lubricating oils have evaporated.

As a beta tester I know that the directions placed on products are there FOR A REASON! It's because beta testers are trying the products in all sorts of manners and weeding out the types of uses and/or applications that DO NOT WORK.

This reply of his is only half correct. ALL marks, whether swirls or marring, are IN THE CLEAR COAT! They are not caused by the factory using a not so high end clear nor being mass produced. I've helped train people at the Arlington truck plant and the paint is not "cheap". They hardly do any buffing on the paint except mainly to sand and remove paint nibs.

He is not the professional he claims he is. Sure he may detail cars but he doesn't have the knowledge of a true pro.

    Hope this helps,
    Anthony

Anthony, that info is dead-on! However:

Your advise will greatly help the OP, but the dealer guy will remain in ignorance.
