I am starting to make my own wine... well want to however I dont know what to buy..... I know there are a few people here who make there own wine. So im planning on getting a starter kit and one of the boxes they offer. the cheapest i have found is 150 plus shipping.. this included everything including bottles.

So does anyone have any sugetions of kits or thing to buy?

Any tips on wine making would be great.

    thanks for the help

Pops and I make our own wine but to tell you the truth you can never make a wine exactly like the someone else even with the same grapes/process.

    We press our two-three times.

There are three ways to make wine

    1. Box kits, I call this "Pretend Wine". These kits use low quality grapes and are designed to be done in a month, they come with additives (Clays, cleansers etc) that quickly get the wine ready. They definitely lack in taste. They are also designed for 6 gallons which is an odd size.

    2. Buying Juice (Usually California) make sure the juice is not watered concentrate; you should pay about 50 for a 5 gallon pail. The must will usually be balanced (acidity) which helps save time. This is personally the method I use, buying good must eliminates you having to squeeze your own and you can usually buy it year round.

    3. Squeeze your own; this is how our family used to do it. It is the most traditional way but what a ton of work!

Once you decide which method to use you will need a few items and some room to store all the bottles, Carboys etc. A basic list of things you need.

    1. Carboys (5 gallon jugs), you will want several of these. You can find these at garage sales, 2nd hand stores etc.
    2. Chemicals, yeasts, sterilizers etc
    3. Primary fermenter (Big pail with lid)
    4. Primary fermented pail heater
    5. Hydrometer
    6. Siphon hoses
    7. Filter
    8. Air Locks, I prefer S-Locks

You need almost a whole spare room dedicated to the making and another for the aging (Cold cellar) a bench, a sink nearby etc. You CAN just start it in the kitchen but carrying 5 gallons of wine up and down the stairs gets old.

I don’t know if this info is helping, I am only scratching the surface. If you have any specific questions just ask.

Remember the number 1 thing you need for winemaking patience! If you want to do this properly...don’t expect to taste your hard work before a year or two! Once you get going you will always be on a 1-2 year buffer, making wine for then and drinking from yesterday.

well thanks or the help everyone, I went out today to a wine making store. I picked the guys brain for an hour and a half. I bought a starter kit and a cheaper wine kit. I asked for one of the ones that was easier to make. Its a ken ridge classic Merlot.

I mixed it all ip today so it needs to sit for about a month before its ready to drink.

I am kinda worried I did something wrong, i wont know for for a couple day.... so i hope i did it right, i hope the yeasst is alright.. I guees only time will tell

I was board today and wanted o try all my new stuff so I went to the wine making store.. i knew it was going to be expensive.

I ended up picking up a select interntioanl pinot nior kit. It was just about double the price of the last kit, had way more juice (i added probley 1/3 the water).I also went out and bought bottled water (the R.O stuff). I added that instead of tap water this time.

i plan on letting this age alittle longer, the merlot (first batch) is to drink in a month, its not going to be great but i cannot wait longer, i will let the other match, the pinot age longer. I will probley have it batch age for longer...

I took lots of pics and will post them as soon as i find the cable

ohh and this hobby is getting really exciting, im having fun, even in the wine is crap it was fun and I will def do it again

Mike..you sound pretty excited doing this...it does sound like fun to me also....I have a winery up the road from me..its a small scale one..less than 300 bottles a year..some time in the summer the stores near me seel grapes and juice for wine making...its mostly the Italian and Portuguese stores...

I may actually try this out this fall and make some...some of the guys in work make elderberry ...blackberry and concord grape wine..since they all grow wild around us...and I tasted some and its real good..

So I think you gave me the bug to try doing it..i have been following this thread since new...

I am very excited. I have been having tons of fun reading and researching. I love to try new things, this is another. Now all I need to do is grow some bacco to make a cigar lol...

I have been to the oakingain (sp) vally in BC and done the wine tours. I love that place, I think i might move there for a summer to work at a winery. It would be an awsome experience.

I wish stuff like berries grew localy but they dont so im forced to buy them. I might look at the farmers market this summer.

if you do give it a try make sure to take lots of pics and start your own thread, I would love to hear how well it works for others :applause2:

I promised I would post pics of batch #2.
So i started by santizing everything, while it was drying I decided to go to the store and see what I could pick up. I decided to go with a pinot noir.

I started by adding the water said. This timeI used bottled water in hopes of making a better bacth

Here is the kit I went with

Here is the water (ok so i took some weirdpics)

Here is the new primary ferfmenter i got

I then added pack 1. Here it is

I stirred for 30 seconds as direcred

Nect I added the juice and topped up to 23L as directed

It then told me to add the oak chips (yup these are actual oak chips, this batch had 2 kinds)

    Package 1
    [IMG]

    Package 2

Then I mixed until they where no longer floating
    [IMG]

It was yeast time, I needed to make sure the juice was between 18C and 24C... it was so we where ready to go

I added the yeast, here is what I used.

It told me to leave it for 24-48 hours to allow the yeast to start working, no stirring was needed, yet

so itgot put in the corner out of the way for the next 24-48 hours

So there is alittle more indeapth look at making wine
