Hello and first of all congratulations for the amazing project!

i am writing to you on this old thred as i need a mold-escaping advice.

so i am the owner of a 1997 Jaguar XK8 that i purchased in February, that had a strong mildew smell, although no visible mold. interior looked absolutely pristine.

together with a friend that owns a local detailing shop (i'm based in europe) we started an adventure in fixing this horrible smell. an adventure that lasts for the last 4 months and still hasn't finished.

i will take it step by step and explain what we did and maybe you can give me your advice in where should we act more to finish it once and for all.

    front seats
    - removed, removed the leather from the spongy filling (found some mold there, used disinfectant), took out the spongy filling, disinfect that too
    - treated the exterior of the leather with Leatherique for several times.
PROBLEM IS THAT EVEN AFTER THIS, THE SEATS STILL SMELL - after driving the car more than 20 minutes, the back of the tshirt smells like mold.

    rear seats
    - found a lot of mold under the bench - proceeded as in the case of the front seats.

    dashboard
-completely dismantled the dashboard and removed the HVAC ventilators. they have a "sponge-like" material that was completely destroyed by mold. replaced it and thoroughly disinfected the interiors
-removed some sponge isolation that was smelling bad
-freely sprayed Vital Oxide, a hospital-grade disinfectant

    door panels, rear panels:
-removed, found some mold inside, cleaned, disinfected

    floor carpets:
-removed, didn't find mold underneath, just a spot of rust that was coming from a leak from somewhere in the dashboard. some rain water entered from somewhere between the wipers/windshield (this car does not have a pollen filter). THE CARPET LOOKS LIKE NEW BUT SMELLS LIKE MOLD, even after several washes and disinfectant applied.

windshield filters (instead of pollen filters) - cleaned, found a lot of mold there, disinfected.

So after all these months, the smell is around 70 percent gone but it still sticks in the clothes. good thing is that now clean air comes from the ventilation system.

    so my conclusion is that:

we need to find a way to better clean the leather of the seats. or maybe is there mold on the inside? or why do the clothes smell when coming in contact with the leather?

we didn't touch the roof (on the inside i mean). this is the next step.

floor carpets. what should we use to get rid of the smell? or should i just replace them (not easy to find a replacement for them)

forgot to mention we used steam for the ventilation system and countless ozone sessions...

thank you so much and hope you can help me finish this fight with a victory :)

sorry to hear about this, cars with mold are difficult to work on, you did everything I would have, maybe clean or steam your headliner but do it with care as you can loosen up the adhesive holding it up and cause a sag. You may have to remove the seats and the covers to find if there is mold in the cushions of the seats, that maybe the most logical next step
