Could save millions of gallons of fuel Audi has released some new details about their traffic light recognition technology. Dubbed Audi Online traffic light information, the system connects the car to the traffic light network via a central traffic computer. Once a connection is established, the Driver Information System will display the speed the driver needs to achieve in order to get a green light at the next intersection. If the driver is already waiting at a red light, the display will show the remaining time until the light turns green. More importantly, the system will automatically start the car's engine - on models equipped with start/stop technology - five seconds before the light turns green. Audi says the system is "production ready" and could be equipped on every model they sell. If this were to happen, drivers would save approximately 900 million liters (237 million gallons) of fuel in Germany alone. The company also says CO2 emissions would be reduced by up to 15 percent. That is awesome!! i like all these little ideas car companies are coming up (i.e. start stop, aerodynamics, sport/economy modes etc.) with to save fuel without cutting back on performance or spending millions if not billions redesigning the "Automobile". Instead of one big great idea, maybe all we need is a few little ideas! awesome stuff phil keep it coming!
I agree that this is awesome technology. I also feel the same way about all the safety technology being introduced. My only issue is cost to the common consumer. These technologies tack on thousands of dollars. Maybe the government should offer rebates for buying safer cars.
That sounds like a good idea^^^ ... i mean the gas guzzler tax isnt saving the world atleast give someone the incentive to buy
Exactly. Many families with kids would love to have these technologies, especially those with young drivers. Rebates, tax incentives, and/or big insurance breaks would definitely push it to the forefront of affordability. Example: Rear-view cams & parking sensors have been incorporated in cars for what.....at least 10 years now...more? They are just now starting to become standard on some base models. These are well known safety technologies. How many accidents could these technologies have saved had they been made more affordable to the general consumer?
I think were onto something here lol also, not to argue our points but for young drivers i wouldnt want them to become dependent on something like a back up camera i could see that happening too just kids staring at the screen instead of looking around. However that seems to be a small drawback that i can think of
