I would call it an eye opener. It really informs you, more specifically, of how much surface you have to work with. Gives really good peace of mind.

If all you polish is your own car or family members, probably not a big deal not to have one. But if you do paid paint correction, its a must. Imagine how much having to paint a panel would cost if you breached the clear coat because you didnt know that the car had been polished or wetsanded before.

No, just shipping, my unit was 145 bucks or so, i paid the "expedited" shipping to get it here in time for a client, it cost me 165 to the door. Got here in like 4 or 5 business days.

I have the combo and it reads REALLY damn close to the shims. The most it has ever been off was on the 47 micron shim, it read 52. But on all the others it was even closer than that, 0-3 microns off usually. Very much inside the tolerance.

lol, its a cool tool man. I measured my mach 1 and was surprised to find the paint was a bit thinner than i thought, still good tho.

I also found a few panels on my buddy's honda that had been repainted, he didnt know lol.

Just might have to get me one of these since I've never used one before. And like you stated, could save one from paying for a repaint
