I have a single stage black car loaded with defects and neglect, I have been wet sanding by hand and after 6+ hours on the hood alone, I need to switch something. How many have you guys attempted something like this? I am looking at the Megs http://www.buffdaddy.com/unigrit/discs/6inch are these good or should I look at another product? Any tips would be helpful.:buffer::buffer::buffer:

6+ hours wet sanding by hand on single stage black.... are you sure you want to cut it more?

When you wet sand by hand 1500, then 2000, touch up, 2000 again, and then 2500, it takes a lot longer than you would think. The hood is done, its the other 80% of the car that remains.

So no one has done anything like this before?

Still man I'm sure you took a lot of paint off. And yes those disc work a lot better and safer.

Have you tried polishing it yet to see how easily the sanding marks are going to come out? 6hrs does seem a bit long for just a hood unless it's rock hard.

I'd give Kevin a call and let him know what you're working on and how the paint is responding, he may suggest the Abranet soft instead. I use the Megs discs you linked as well as a lot of Mirka disks (Abralon and Abranet), all of which will do the job, but each shines in it's own unique way.

To wet sand a whole car: 1: if its the original paint, your playing with fire 2: even if you dont cut trough, chances are pretty high if not 100% that you will have removed the u.v protection in the clear ( so you will polish back to shine and few months after the clear will be dead again). 3: wetsanding a whole car original paint without a ptg and a lot of experience should be a no no 4: if you still want to do it, get some 3m trizact 1500-300 or the equivalent in megs or mirka and damp sand the whole car eith a DA

I assumed it was a repaint, but then again the OP never stated if it was or not....

What is the make and model of the car? I have a car with single stage black paint and its pretty dang soft. Single stage paints usually are. Even though the defects look really bad, most of it should cut out with polishing. Single stage usually gives you more paint to work with, that being said I wouldn't want to hack it all off with one go because its gonna need regular maintenance. When I polished my car, I opted to leave the deep scratches because I knew I would be polishing it again. Just the nature of super soft black paint... I want to get into wet sanding as well so I'm taking notes lol

The car is a 93 Jaguar, I know what I am doing with hand sanding, the car has been repainted and is thick. I am not worried about the paint, I appreciate the concern but everything is fine. The maaco paint job has been neglected and abused by a lawyer who must have washed it with 80 grit paper and let his kids play with screw drivers and ice picks. I will give Kevin a call.

Thanks, I have plenty of experience wet sanding new paint jobs by hand, but I have never tried a machine. Usually on the new paint all I am doing is leveling and removing overspray, but the repaint on this can is thick, old, chipped, cracked, and very uneven. I will be calling Kevin on Monday. Thanks
