If you guys had to go with one or the other, then what has better results as far as cutting swirls and RIDS, D300 with the MF cutting pads or Surbuf R series pads with M105 Both would be used on a Griot's DA
Both cut well, obviously the Surbuf with M105 will cut more but you get a lot of micro marring and haze with them. Personally I much prefer D300 and MF pads because it cut's nice but finishes great.
I'm planning to follow compounding with polishing on a Lake Country Tangerine with Menzerna 203 and lastly Menzerna 85rd with a Blue Uber Blue pad So more marring and haze isn't a huge issue for me. I'm just skeptical of how much a DA will cut is all. Im my past experience, if you use the same compound and pads as you use on a rotary on a DA, you get a lot less cutting of deep RIDS. I'm told though that it's my choice of pads and polishes. I tried M105 and an Uber orange on my PC and got not that much removal of RIDS. Really want to move to a DA for easier use, but want the cut to correct 95-100% Can anyone upload pics of before and after using a DA and cutting compounds/ pads so I can see what to expect?
I can just say it has a lot of cut. Surbuf is pretty much wool for a D/A, and will leave a similar finish. Orange/203 should clear it up. I might recommend trying 106FA/Blue depending on how hard the paint is. I'm not sure 85RD would have the power on a D/A to remove the micromarring from the Orange/203.
You were told right, it was your choice of pads and polish. The Megs Cutting Disc and D300 will cut waaaaaaay better than any combination on a foam pad. I haven't used the Surbufs so can't comment on them. I am just finish off a BMW 1M in solid black that had been washed at the dealer. Not pretty. Polished with D300/Cutting disc and finished with Scholl S30/ BS Green. Correction was over 95% although a couple panels did need a few passes. I'll get some pics for you. ON any paint other than soft BMW or GM clear, that combo shouldn't leave any micromarring if polished down enough. The BMW I'm working on required the finishing polish to be polished out beyond going clear or micromarring would remain. I agree
I'm currently working a yellow pad on Rotary with PowerFinish on a R8 and it's leaving no micro marring behind since i'm letting all the polish to work through :headbang:
I haven't tried the microfiber pads yet but I've seen a number of reports of D300/cutting pads leaving quite bit of hazing and micro-marring behind on soft Japanese paints (Mazda, Honda, Subaru, etc.). Since I mostly work with these paints/cars and can usually get as much cut as I'm comfortable with (no PTG) using old formula 203S/foam pads and leave an acceptable finish without a second polishing stage I've been reluctant to even given them a shot. Has anyone here used the microfiber system(s) on Japanese cars and if so how were your results? The numerous reports of short pad life have also been off-putting.
My heaviest cutting combo I have currently is Menzerna Power Gloss with an Uber Yellow pad on a Flex 3401. However, on my latest detail this past weekend, I found that I still am not cutting as fast or efficiently as I would like to. In your guys' experience, would the D300/GG6/Meg's MF cutting disc cut faster than my current setup above? I've been waiting to take Phil's next polishing class to learn the proper techniques before I dive into the MF pad arena. This thread has great info for me, I appreciate all the info you guys have posted. Jae
That may be arguable; but, yes, depending on the products you're using with them, you can get a heck of a lot of cut out of them.
i have had mixed results with d300 vs m105 and a yellow pad ..on soft or medium paints d300 is super effective and seems to cut more and more evenly then 105 ..but on harder paints it seems to do zero where m105 will cut /finish very well
