New cars from Infiniti can come equipped with a new “Scratch Shield,” which is a special self-healing clear coat paint. Although it is only effective on minor scratches, this new paint actually works! It takes anywhere from one day to one week depending on the surrounding temperature and depth of the scratch. This “self-healing” works because of a highly elastic resin. When this resin is combined with a conventional clear coat, the paint’s flexibility and strength are increased, allowing minor scratches to “heal” themselves! NOTE - I saw this on Twitter and do not know the source of said information, however, I wanted to share with DB. Personally, I dont believe it. If this is a repost, my apologies.
Its true and it is a pain to correct. Someone on here did a black infinity g series and posted a write up.
Ill have to search for it. So, we have cars that talk, park themselves, and now correct their own paint.
I have an '07 g35 and it takes a while to correct defects. A simply 1-step enhancement with menzerna p203s will take AT LEAST all day. Hone
I fixed 4 or 5 of these cars last year. They are a major pain due to the paint swelling and just plain F'ed up paint. The owners of all of them said it was the biggest waste of 1800 bucks or whatever it costed. The biggest thing is that the paint looks perfect when hot from buffing, but when it cools, it looks like you haven't touched it.
I have done a bunch of these as well. I basically approach it very conservatively and without resorting to stupid aggressive techniques to correct. Its not really a big deal, they just weren't that responsive to being hammered on and really don't like a lot of warmth producing techniques.
True that, scratches just as easy yet is harder to correct. Those guys behind the curtains just sit there and think how to make life of law abiding citizens more difficult. Brilliant idea, let's make clearcoat that scratches just a easy yet is harder to polish if needed...
