Is there a process behind this? What tools are recommended? Apparently its a week old lacquer sitting on top of the clear.
well if is painted on you need to first take 2000 grit sand paper wet the area with water or window cleaner.and test each panel to make sure that the pinstripe hasnt been cleared over top. trust me this happened to me 2 times!! sometimes a panel will get repainted and the jackass body shops will paint over the pinstripes.if you get black paint coming off on each panel your in the clear.you may want to tape up around the stripe and wet sand it all off. takes a little time but it works well.then buff the wet sand scratches out.just take your time. and keep work area clean!
Sounds like something I can do. What kind of pricing would you give to remove such a stripe on a Passat?
dude im not the one to ask. i live in the middle of amish country so i dont charge much at all for anything.lol but if its just like side work i would say between $50-$75. if thats all your doing.
Are you sure its painted on? From the picture, the edge is so sharp, it looks like the plastic pinstripe tape they use at Dealerships. It is really hard to get the wide and narrow pinstripes painted that close together and even, like they are in the picture. These stripes look just like the plastic tape ones to me. Maybe they have a template they lay over the body and paint them in? Wow, looks like a lot of work even that way, and then they want to take them off ?? Hmmmmm... Dan F
I agree with Deep Gloss and Stokdgs ... those pinstripes are decals and not paint. Usually painted pinstripes don't have sharp ends and you can see brush marks if you look at them closely. IIRC, you can remove plastic pinstripes the same way you remove dealer decals. Do a forum search here or Autopia just in case they are painted ... I remember reading people removing painted pinstripes with "Easy-Oven", but don't quote me on that one.
These are pictures from one of the sales reps at the dealer. He purchased this Passat from his dealer and the pinstripe guy came around the lot before he knew it and hit his up. He assures me it's lacquer and on top of the clear.
Easy oven can yellow clear I don't recommend! Also there are some really think lacquer pinstripes. Looks painted on to me.
That's why I mentioned to check the thread before recommending something I have never tried before. I also remember seeing an attachment that looked like a rubber wheel for pinstripes (works like an eraser), but I don't remember if it worked on laquer pinstripes.
yeah i just thought I clear it up for ya.lol and i used those rubber erasers before. they work ok for old stick on pinstripes that dont come off easy with a plastic blade and solvent. but again not for painted ones.risk of burning paint.
