Hey DB. Quick question for those of you familiar with opti coat. My wifes car was keyed on multiple panels and we will be taking it in for repair. I have not talked to the body shop yet but am guessing I will need to polish the opti coat off in order for them to repaint correct?
I would assume that they are wetsanding the panels in need of repaint and degreasing them with prepsol or similar bodyshop degreaser, so I'd think the wetsanding/ scuff pad work would remove the OC? If they will be blending panels and not fully sanding the panels which will be blended then I can see the clearcoat not sticking well on an OC treated surface.
If they are painting a whole panel ( most likely they will) they have to sand it down to primer, base then reclear.
More then likely they will just scuff the paint and repaint the whole panel/blend. It is not common practice to sand down to primer.
As long as the body shop is prepping the panel the way they should be, there is absolutely no issues with having Opti-Coat(Guard) on the panel when you bring it in. Edit: Chris beat me to the punch.
And, if the shop has to Blend into adjoining panels, they should be doing a compounding of said panels to allow all the panels to look the same, and then they will prepsol everything, do the paintwork, and blend as needed. The Opticoat will not be there wherever they are going to blow paint on. Dan F
Thanks for all of the input. I will be sure to let the shop know before they start the work.....looks like it may be awhile they just hit another panel today. Don't want to fix it so it can get keyed on a new panel.
