Is it possible to use clear coat like touch up paint?

Say you have a RDS that is too deep to chase but hasn't cut into the color coat (or very slightly). Would it be possible to get a touch up bottle of clear coat and fill in the scratch, wet sand and compound to blend it in?

 

I'm not sure about having it in a can or pen, but you could get it in a bottle and "brush" it on. Let it dry and do the process you're suggesting. Spraying it would cause over spray and leave the rest of the panel uneven. I haven't heard of pens with clear.

 

They make the pens. You should be able to find them at an auto parts store with the touch up pens.

 

Don't most touch-up paints have a clear coat blended into the paint?

 

This is my impression too. I get my touch up paint directly from a body shop, and I am pretty certain it does have clear mixed in.

 

This is why I said I've never heard of clear only pens.

 

Good to know since I didn't know this. Yes, most touch-up paints have clear in them unless specified.

 

I know there is one known as magna mark scratch eliminator but it would work only if the base coat is intact. However, I have never once able to blend in the clear coat resin with its original clear.

 

Clear coat is available in pens from several on-line sources. Also, a couple big name touch-up companies offer two step touch up paint.

 

I just apply the touch up paint with the brush or a toothpick and then let it dry for a few hours or a day. I then come back and wet sand with some 2500 grit then 3000 grit Meguiars unit-grit sand paper then compound, polish and seal it
