sport mode. That and not having to slow down for corners, This car makes me smile every time im in it. Kinda like my girlfriend.
wow lot of you guys have GTI's. I have been working for a dealership network of Nissans and VW for many years. 2 months ago I moved to our new VW store and have been amazed by almost the whole line. Just drove a GTI with DSG last week for the first time and it was a pleasure.
Scion FR-S... Nuff said. Lightweight, RWD, high revving, and cheap. Was in the market to buy a GTI before this though. It's an appealing car due to its nice quality, turbo engine, and practicalilty+looks.
MKV Rabbit owner here. Not quite as quick as a stock GTI but the sound of the five cylinder makes up for it IMO.
What do people think about the GTI compared to a Mazda3? Drove a 2012 Mazda3 with the Skyactiv engine and 6 speed manual and I really liked the transmission. The steering feel is nothing like what I'm used to on a BMW, though. I wish the Subaru BR-Z/Scion FR-S was available already. Would consider it over a 1 series.
can only compare GTI to mazdaspeed3 cuz mazda 3 aint got no turbo. steering feel wise, mazdas are kinda a bit too light imo. seriously though, the DSG makes all the difference, even the mini cooper S i test drove wasnt as fun as the GTI lol
Yea, biggest disappointment when I drove the Mazda3. I always hear it as being a great hot hatch so I was expecting something great. Don't really want a VW for some reason, though.
I was hesitant on VW as well until i test drove it. The car just seems to do everything right. I will say however that service and parts for VW can be pricey when compared to other manufacturers. (i paid $200 installed for splashguards :| ) the MS3 has a good deal more power, but it doesnt handle it very well. Its still a nice car though. Test drive them both and you'll see, especially if you have the dealer go through all the features of each car. My GTI is 5 months old and im still finding stuff.
I'm not going to bash the VW, but I will defend the MS3. These 2 cars can not be compared. First off there is a 65 HP difference which is huge for this category even with the extra 200 pounds the speed has over the GTI. Also, the current generation speed3 doesn't handle as well as the previous, but it is still a world ahead of pretty much every other car in it's price range/category. The GTI handles just as well, if not a little better, but this can be attributed to weight balance and tires as top gear has tested both a GTI and a Speed 6 (which has the same engine and power as the Speed 3 but with more weight) and the speed was an entire second and a half faster than the GTI. Not hating, just leveling the playing field But to answer Aldric's question: Because Race car?
I have a Mazda3 and will say that the the interior build quality is something I am really disappointed in. I think same can go for the Speed3 which I have test driven a few times and get the same feel from on the inside, the fit and finish just doesn't seem to be as high of a quality as a GTI. Though the Mazda3/Speed3 each have superior driving compared to their class. If I wasn't in need for AWD/4WD I would be at a VW dealership right now trying to get a GTI.
Test drove a GTI today. It was a very good looking car but I was seriously disappointed in the steering feel. It was just as light as the Mazda3 IMO. Lease rates were also crazy and nearing BMW 128i territory. Then decided to go to the Subaru dealer for the 2012 Impreza. Only got the putt around the parking lot with an automatic version but the steering feel was much heavier than the Mazda3 and GTI; still not BMW heavy but it has a decent feel to it. It is my new favorite Japanese car based on steering feel. Lease rates were also very close to the Mazda3 so I am now comparing a Subaru Impreza to a 128i.
^You're the first guy I know who WANTS a heavy steering. lol. Most want light, crisp and nimble. I tried a 335xi last summer and it was almost hard turning corners because the steering was so heavy. To each his own preferences I guess
Yea, I've grown up driving BMW's and it is a preference I guess. I like the fact that it's heavy so you know the car is planted, but when you start to overdrive the car, the steering gets lighter as the wheels have less weight on them. Newer BMW's have been getting lighter steering, but when I got into the 128i, it all reverted back to the old, heavy steering which I love. But gosh, a 128i is expensive to insure, even for my father who has no tickets! Almost costs as much as my mother's X6 which costs twice as much.
Only thing that bugs me abt the DSG is you can't double-down shift like you can with Evo's dual-clutch tranny can.
