I have a car that will not see any (or much) action over the winter. I saw a plastic (dry clean like bag) cover on a car at a dealer where it was awaiting pick up. It had been detailed by an outside detailer and was waiting for the owner. 1. I had was if I could locate one of these is it a good idea to cover the car in a loose fitting plastic for 31/2 months? Pro's are it keeps the dust off, possible negatives are that it could trap ambient moisture in the air under the plastic. The car is brand new and will be spanking clean when I put it away. I may even run it a few times over the winter on dry days. That brings another few questions. 2. Do I stabalize the fuel? 3. Do I over inflate the tires to 50 PSI from 34 (dealer reccomendation PSI) so thaey don't flat spot? 4. If I get rim cradles do I still need to over inflate tires? Answers depend on if it's stored in a heated garage or not. I'll just give you my personal storage advise: -If you leave the car parked for more than 2 weeks, unplug the battery. -More than 3 month? Stabilize the fuel with at least half a tank of gas. -Fill your tires with Nitrogen as it isn't affected by ambient temperatures and will not "deflate" your tires. -If this is done, you won't need rim cradles. -Also, NEVER leave a car parked for a long period of time with the handbrake on. -Leave it in gear so as not to jam and possibly warp your rear discs. I wouldn't suggest unplugging the battery, but it does need to be maintained. Get a trickle charger to keep it juiced up through the winter. -Kody-
Well... I wouldn't recommend a "trickle charger" because they do tend to over charge batteries. However most new chargers usually have a "maintenance" mode. They are microprocessor controlled and will only charge your battery when needed, now worries about damaging your battery.
Oh, I forgot to add, DO NOT start your car every once in a while just to turn over the engine. Best leave it alone instead. You will uselessly create heat in the exhaust and cause condensation and eventually block the exhaust with ice. I've seen it done. I will post a video if people are reluctant to believe me.
