This client ad owned this car for a few years but had never had it professionally detailed. Al though it had low mileage, the lack of care bestowed by the previous owner meant this P car was due for some serious TLC. After an inspection, we decided the best course of action was a two step correction. As well, we were sending the two rear wheels out for some repair. As the client had other cars to drive, we were able to keep it as long as we needed to make it nice. Engine, jambs and all trim cleaned with Exclusive APC@3:1 and RG brushes Washed with Blackfire Soap and Megs MF mitt Inner fenders cleaned with Exclusive APC straight and dressed with 303 Wheels cleaned with Exclusive Wheel Cleaner beta. Built up brake dust on back of spokes tidied up with a mild acid @8:1 Polished with Megs MF cutting pad and Megs D300 cutting compound on my PC. Finishing was done with Scholl S30 / B&S Green on my PC as well. LSP was two coats of Exclusive Paint Sealant Interior wiped down with AG Interior Shampoo Seats cleaned with Leatherique Rejuvenator and conditioned with Leatherique Prestine Clean. All glass cleaned with AG Glass Polish Exterior glass sealed with DG Nano Sealant beta Wheels sealed with BF All Metal Sealant Tires dressed with Exclusive Tire Dressing Total time - I stopped counting at 30 hours The Porsche as delivered. Looking a little sad. There was quite a bit of brake dust build up on the wheels. The engine and compartment were quite dirty. This area was cleaned with Exclusive APC@3:1 and then dressed with Carpro PERL. Exhaust tips were quite dirty and were polished with Optimum Metal Polish and 0000 steel wool before being sealed with BF All Metal Sealant. Small bit of was built up on the edge of the hood. Under the hood was very dusty. Area was cleaned with Exclusive APC@3:1 and all plastics and rubber seals were dressed with Carpro PERL. Calipers were unpainted cast versions and unfortunately were stained from someone using an inappropriate cleaning solution. The two rear wheels were damaged and were being sent out for refinishing but evidently would need some cleaning before going out. Inner fender before.... and after. It took around 3.5 hours to clean and dress all four inner fenders and suspension. One of the many scratches around the car. Undetermined "stuff" on paint. The dullness on the rear spoiler is actually overspray. Great. Swirling is evident all over the car and deeper RIDS were evident on most panels as well. Swirling was really bad on rear trunklid. As we couldn't remove the emblem ( over $100 for a new one ) we would have to carefully tape it off and polish as closely as possible. Looks like a birdbomb had sat on the paint and then the subsequent wipedown did even more damage. All taped off, waiting for polishing. Notice how dull the paint is looking. After one pass of the Megs MF cutting pad and D300. Nice. Swirling on headlight before.... and after. Headlights were corrected with Menz Power Finish on Orange CCS pads via Flex 3403. Love the curves on this car. 50/50 shot on the hood. One RID that was a wee bit too deep to chase. Paint readings on the car hovered around the 100 mark. Tail light before.... and after. Same polishing combo as headlights. We removed the tail lights to clean all the dirt out from behind them. Yikes! After wiping down with QD. Same procedure was followed for the headlights. Before.... and after. All wheel nuts and bolts were repainted to maintain a clean appearance. Front inner fender tidied up. Water staining under the hood. After removing with Sonax Paintwork Cleanser ( thanks Todd C ) and a MF towel. Seats taking an extended soak in Leatherique. Under the hood all finished. All rubbers and plastic dressed with Carpro PERL. Some stubborn dirt buildup in door sill. Easily removed with a Q Tip and Werkstat Prime Strong. Map pocket liners were removed and cleaned with AG Interior Shampoo. The results. Crud build up in the end of the turn signal arm. All cleaned out via a stiff bristled brush. Sorry for the blurry pic. Pedals and heel pad were scrubbed down with AG Interior Shampoo and a toothbrush. Yes, I still use them! LOL Engine dialed in. After cleaning, engine was dressed with 303 while the fan was dressed with AG Silicone Spray. Time for entertainment. This is the detailer across from me destroying yet another paint job. Notice he's over half way through washing his hapless clients truck and yet there is no water on the ground from any kind of pre rinse. Hmmmmmm...... After all polishing and one coat of Exclusive Paint Sealant. Posing with a Cayman we had in the shop for a few days. Sweeeeeeeet!!! Can you say "WIDE" children? I knew you could! When remounting the wheels, I wanted to protect the nuts we had resprayed so we covered them in plastic before slding them into the socket. Torquing the wheels to factory settings. Very nice. Back to better than new now. A few pics of the refinished wheel. Place that did the wheels sprayed them and then mounted the tires an hour later. That resulted in marring the clear on the backside of the wheels. The car received a second coat of sealant as well. Here are the afters. I was playing around with the camera so I apologize for the the duplicates. They all looked good so I included them. Enjoy. Thanks so much for enduring the lengthly write up.
it's a shame about the "refinished" wheels. I've been seeing more and more painters and refinishers screw up. I'm scared to use body shops. Otherwise it's a job well done!
Ken amazing work I really enjoyed reading this write up, its one of your best for sure! What a transformation Ken. How do you like Sonax Nano Paint Cleaner I read the article Todd C wrote on it on DI seem like its some great stuff, but I would like to here what you think about it.
Incredible work again Ken! Would love to hear more about your beta sealant and the exclusive tire dressing. -Kody-
Bravo Ken, great write up. I learned a great way to protect wheel nuts while remounting them thank you
Excellent work and attention to detail! I guess you'll use the two handed brush washing method like your neighbor uses on the next P car? lol
Ken do the "Do", Wurth wheel paint FTW..........................when I did the 96 C4S I painted the lugs at the start of the correction and used my heat gun to replicate a (Oven) just so I would not marr the fresh paint.........who knew some saran wrap would have saved me all that effort Ken(lol). Outstanding work on a Porsche with a little 'Patina".
I just read his article a few days before this car arrived so thought I'd give it a shot. Although the water spotting wasn't bad, it did clean it up quite easily with just a mf towel. I don't use AIO's around here as the durability is always lacking but I will keep it around for jobs like this. If you think thats funny, wait until I get a video of this guy with his Cyclo! Its actually a sandwich bag. Saran wrap is too thin and tears too easily.
I lightly sprayed the insides of each socket with Plasti-Dip. I also bit the bullet on the Griots Protective Socket set. So bolts and wheel are protected when installing/removing.
