Flat black wheel cleaning

Hello all

I have a pair of wheels for my Subaru (Volk RE30) in flat black. I have noticed that the wheels have developed a light film or haze over the them. This has developed over time. I wash the wheels like I always have with P21s wheel gel and various brushes but still have this problem. Is there something out there that can bring the dark color back to the wheels? Or is this on par for any flat/satin black wheel?

 

I'm not sure, maybe a more seasoned detailer can chime in but I'm wondering if you can use polish to cut throught the haze or correct any marring that might exist. Have you also protected them after cleaning them.

 

Yes I have sealed them with Menzerna Power Lock but I still get this problem.

 

I've experienced this before and for me all it was was built up residue from the wheel cleaner/soap. I simply got rid of it by scrubbing hard with a MF.

 

I will try that. Would a stronger wheel cleaner be able to get off the build up I already have on there?

 

I used AG CWC on my flat bronze works..... and that is what I use strictly on anything other then OEM. you cannot hurt them,I used Z2 to seal the afore mentioned wheels and had no issue with hazing.

you can always have them re finished too...........

 

No, a stronger wheel cleaner probably won't do much. I would just try really scrubbing it and see if that helps get rid of that white stuff. I've had this happen with both P21S gel and Blackfire Wheel Cleaner. But you can get it off.

 

did u clean the wheels while they are hot? cleaning wheels while cool is the most important thing.

 

All the times I can remember washing my car yes. There may have been one time where I didn't cool down the brakes. This car is not my daily driver so most of the time I drive it out of the garage into the drive way wash it then pull it back in again.

next question...... does it seem permanent? or can you wipe if off but it comes back?

 

It seems like after I wash it and it drys it comes right back.

 

could be the actual finish is failing...... how old are they?

 

Almost two years old. I have seen Volks way where the coating still looks brand new I dont think its the coating but you never know.

 

that is pretty new........ im at a loss, sounds like it could be one of the products, maybe the water? hard to say.

 

My guess is you might have let the wheel cleaner sit on the surface too long. The sun probably dried it on and got baked into the surface. Pretty sure you'll be able to get rid of it no problem. Even an AIO with a foam pad should take care of it.

 

I've had my flat black SSR type F wheels for over 2 years, I clean them with P21s wheel gel cleaner as well, and I have not had the problem you are describing.

 

My brother is having the same problem with his satin black wheels. One thing to watch for with Volks is that most of them are anodized and some are cleared over top. Its a very fussy finish. As M3ride said, try an AIO or even a paintwork cleanser like P21S or Werkstat should get rid of the staining.
