'96 Subaru Outback Headlight Restoration

This is my sisters $1000 car and I decided to use it as a guinea pig as a headlight restoration.

Steps.
Wetsand with 600grit Sand Paper
Wetsand with 1000grit Sand Paper
Polish with M105 on the DA.







Pics didn't really do it justice. Headlights looked brand new.

Nice results! Question, why didn't you do another step? A higher grit after the 1000 I mean.

 

That was the highest grit sand paper I could find at Menards lol

 

on a nicer car i would definately not use 1000 grit as your last step. i used to begin with 1000 and then 2000, then it would finish nicely.
but looks like they came out great.

 

Like I said, it was my guinea pig car haha. I am gonna hunt around and try to find some 2000 grit.

 

I finished with 800 grit and wondered why it wasn't perfectly clear. Then after about an hour I remembered I didn't use a higher grit!

How do you guys use the sandpaper on the lights? With a D.A or what?

 

I just use a sanding block. They come in all different shepes. Never use only your hand

 

Indeed, i usually go 800, 1200, 2000. Then with my highest compound/pad, medium pad, polish.
