Painted? As in.... it's underneath the clearcoat? I wouldn't mess with that at all if that's the case.
Usually if its a custom pinstripe laid down by a really good automotive artist, its done on top of the paint. And as you already know I am sure, vinyl pinstripes are also applied on top of the clear coat, and are removed by heat, or a solid rubber wheel called a pinstripe eraser that is chucked to an air drill. If you want to do it the long way, work over it with 3M gen purpose adhesive remover and a plastic razor blade...ask me how I know:applause2:
I have used this to remove pin stripes mouldings etc......... Ive never had issues damaging the clear. But you can burn the paint if you let it sit in one place too long

Are you referring to Easy Off as in the oven cleaner? I would have second thoughts about it if that is the case. In the aircooled VW world the big thing right now is originality--including original paint. So many VW owners have used Easy Off oven cleaner to strip off old repaints to strip the car down to the original paint. I even tried it, Easy off is some nasty, very very strong stuff. Here is a thread showing some of the results of this paint removal.
