I've contacted Flex too on this issue, told them that they would need to make a 130mm BP. They reported back that they had a lot of people from the states wanting a smaller BP too, but they didn't have any plans to make one.

I guess I'll go for a Festool RO150 instead, with the 130mm BP.

    Kind regards,

    Ebbe

I'd definitely buy a 4" backing plate for my 3401.

Just got this e-mail back from Eric at Lake Country (only minutes after I contacted him nonetheless)

"Should be available by spring. Thanks for your interest."

    Sweet!

Any more details about this? Sound interesting! I would DEFINITELY but one if not a couple just to be safe.

Someone needs to show this thread to Flex or some other company who can make a good backing plate. Not a 4-3/8 bp.... a BP for 4" pads...

I understand DD has the new OEM backing plate its being called a 4 inch plate (specifically 4 3/8- inch) the perfect size for 5.5 – inch pads, its expected availability is March 2011

That only solves the problem for those who wanted to use a 5.5" pad.... which is a tiny number of people compared to all the ones who were asking for a plate to be used with 4" pads.

Prove to any Mfg there is a viable market for a product or a revision to an existing one and they will usually respond positively

Perhaps by putting a thread together showing X number of people that would be interested in purchasing this item and forwarding it to the Mfg

That's excessive in my opinion. Their marketing team should be on top of these kinds of thins without us needing to send them anything. If they're unaware of what detailers are wanting, they're not doing a very good job of scoping markets.

You can rest assured that threads like this one are floating on virtually every detailing forum on the internet. So, the need for the smaller (less than 4") BP is pretty obvious.

And if it makes any difference, I did send them a very detailed letter a while back addressing the issue of not being offered any BP choice on this machine as of that date. No response, nothing.

I wonder if they even read what an average consumer has to say about new product ideas....

haha i can't believe this thread is still going on!!! I don't even have a flex anymore!

It seems when they designed the flex, they maybe didn't look into the future of smaller backing plates. It doesn't seem to have much wiggle room to make a smaller one without doing some damage somewhere along the way

I'd prefer to call it being pro-active
