Slight vent here, sorry. But I have a friend...she's an awesome person, and I love hanging out with her at her house. But. Every time I go there, it seems like there is something there waiting to damage my car. The day I got my license, I drove my '09 GTI there to say hi. When I went back outside, one of her cats was walking on my car. I love cats, but I was pissed off... especially at the fact that no one there cared that it was on my car. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago. She invited me over to watch some Doctor Who, so I drove over there, only to find a large evergreen branch blocking half the driveway. I tried to go around it...and it still managed to scratch my window, mirror, and rear pillar. Not terribly, but its there and I notice it. Why would you not trim that branch so it doesn't scratch your car or your friend's cars EVERY TIME you or they pull in your driveway? And again today. We've had ice and snow, so everything is quite slippery. Did I mention her family has a gravel driveway, but they do nothing to maintain it so there's massive holes and ditches all over it? Anyway, backing out to leave...and front wheels get stuck in one of the many ditches in the driveway. I get stuck. I'm 17 and live in Kentucky where we don't get much snow, so I know I'm not the best driver in these conditions. But I was pretty mad that I got stuck in a driveway. Moved forward and backward till I managed to free my car from the ditch. About to pull out, so I swing wide to avoid that damn tree branch and...another ditch, several inches deep, between the driveway and the road. The car won't budge out of it. I tried gently rocking to get out...nothing. I tried all forms of gently removing myself from the ditch, still nothing. Finally gunned it and pulled back out of it, and then went for the road full steam ahead. Still barely made it, I almost got stuck AGAIN. I feel bad for my car, I probably took it to redline once or twice :sorry: (To people who are probably laughing at me for my inadequate snow driving techniques, I know I am stupid and there probably was a much better way to get my car out of the ditch than brute force.) Maybe I'm overreacting. Maybe I royally suck at driving in the snow and ice (Quite likely). But regardless of that, how do you politely tell people who don't care about their cars at all that their property is actively attacking your car every time you visit? Is it even worth mentioning? I would at least want them to trim that stupid tree. Sorry I just totally vented but anyone else would just call me crazy
I forgot to mention. They're not exactly hippies, but she would probably be mad at me for hurting the tree. No I am not kidding.
Just tell your friend to trim the tree and fix the pot holes in the drive way becasue its a pita to go in and get out. And carry a C02 powered pellet handgun for the cat shoot his ass when he jumps off the car and while your friend isn't looking haha! Or just park on the street and not in their drive way.
Why would you drive that close to a potential hazard? and why the hell would you post the google map of a friends house? Did the branch just jump out and hit your car? I don't know what pisses me off more, people that are inconsiderate or people that are stupid. :fs:
She lives on a busy street, no way I would park on it. No one parks on it. It was hit the branch or potentially run off the driveway, as it was covered in snow and I couldn't see where it ended. I couldn't just stop with the back end of my car sticking out onto the busy street with a blind corner right before the house, nor could I back out into the same busy street. I am not stupid. Although you make a point about the link, I haven't been thinking straight lately, I shall remove it :thumb: EDIT. Sorry, I just realized that this post makes me look like a bit of an idiot. I'm not entirely sure what I was thinking when I wrote it. I think my restlessness at being stuck at home bored on snow days and wanting to do something combined with my irritation at how going to a friend's house always seems to screw up my car. Don't judge me If a moderator happens to come along, feel free to delete the whole thing...
You are 17 and take care of your things. Most kids your age take everything for granted and don't even take care of their selves let alone their car. I'd say you're ahead of the curve, but you need to find some like minded friends otherwise you are gonna be pissed and frustrated all the time.
Nice set of wheels... now do what you have to protect her ! Having said that can't your find a babe who has a better set up for parking , heated indoor garage and detailing area )))
Just so you know, if the engine is warm, that's actually a GOOD thing. Red lining your car every once in a while helps cleaning out the engine and knocking loose and eliminating carbon build up. Laughing at someone because they don't know how to do something or haven't learned is just disrespectful. I know that even here in Eastern Canada, we get heavy snow falls - and I mean like 10 inches twice in a week - Although I have winter tires, sometimes "brute force" is the only thing you can do. Spin the wheels until the snow below it melts or moves so you get traction on tarmac. I should suggest getting winter tires though, they must be dirt cheap by you. I'm going to ass-u-me that this is a girl you're interested in and that you visit quite often - as in date. The polite way of mentioning the fact would be to let them in on your story, as a casual thing that happened...but at then end of it all, just shoot a "speaking of which, I can take care of it for you guys" and just cut/trim the tree yourself. If they ARE tree huggers, then they should already know that every time the tree touches your car, it gets more damaged then if it was trimmed, WHICH coincidently happens to help the growth of a tree, just like it does with hair! If all this fails, then as mentioned above, get a new friend. You have worked hard (or at least I hope so) to get your car and seem to care for it very much. Anyone who doesn't respect that isn't really worth being around since this car does apparently mean a lot to you.:thumb:
Thanks for that! We are not interested in dating or anything, there's several things in the way of that but I'm sure you don't want to hear that much about my personal life :thumb: However she is one of my best friends so we do see each other quite often. She regards me taking care of a car as weird, as though it is something that is abnormal and maybe not entirely healthy. As soon as it gets warm I will bring up trimming that tree, right now it's covered in ice. If all else fails she can hold the stupid branch back for me every time I pull into/out of her driveway Yes I worked hard for the car--I did not pay for it however the deal was that if I got that car, I would have to maintain a high GPA, take advanced and AP classes, get my Eagle Scout, do Beta Club, National Honors Society, pay for gas, stuff like that. I know I am very fortunate to have parents who can afford to buy me such a nice car, and I do my absolute best to keep it well-maintained, as I would expect someone else to do if I bought them a car. I'm also not one of those kids who brags nonstop on the car their parents bought them, that drives me crazy. Clark
You know, it's funny. I regard people who DON'T take care of their cars that way. I know I'm digressing off the original subject but I need to say it. 95% of people don't know or care about the performance of their cars, meaning they choose and buy their cars based on the cars' looks. And then, they turn around and think that taking care of the major selling point is useless and weird. Go figure. :shead::crasy::gasp:
