Hi, abit new to the detailing scene. I would say im a reasonably hands on person and have access to a rotary polisher. i was intending to buy some polishing pads and it may seem a silly question but are the pads discarded once they have been used. i have an older car i was planning on prcticeing on first and so is it best to buy 2 sets of the new pads?

Pads can be used multiple times.
I simply hose them off with a pressure washer (regular hose nozzle works in a pinch), squeeze them out and repeat until all compound/polish residue is gone then spin them on the highest speed possible to get the water out. Then I hang them to air dry a bit.
I have at least 2 and sometimes more of each pad because most pads won't make it anywhere near through the entire car before they need to be washed clean of residue. Once a pad is caked you can wash it, hang it to dry, and continue polishing with your other pads.

just clean the pads afterwards and viola you can use em again
theres also these pad cleaners and reconditioning brushes out there
personally, if you're just using pads on like 2-3 cars of your own, i dont think you even need to try to recondition em or use the pad cleaner, just hand wash em and when they're bad, use new ones :D

I go through about 12+ pads per detail. That is for a 2 step correction.

I have a bucket of warm water with me at my details. Once a pad becomes (to my standard) caked with residue, I will toss it in the bucket and it'll presoak the whole time I am detailing the car.

Fill a bucket up with warm water and throw in a packet of snappy clean pad cleaner. Lake Country Snappy Clean Pad Cleaner | Detailed Image
