Today we had the pleasure of detailing a very rare BMW M1. The car was built in 1980 and has been with the owner since new covering only 19,000Kms in that time. This is one of only 456 cars ever built and the only road legal one in Ireland. The main aim of the detail was to bring a bit of life back into the body. The car has had a lot of engine and drive train restoration and will eventually be getting a full respray when everything else is finished. So onto the Detail, not too many pics as we were very tight for time and are going to take the car to a better location for some proper pics in the near future… The decision was made to give the car a good enhancement detail to remove as many marks as possible, however the owner did not want the engine bay fully detailed as it is very temperamental to moisture. The interior was also going to get a good clean and all the leather was fed and conditioned. On Arrival: The car was clean needing a minimal wash and clay but it was evident that the paint was showing a lot of the Fibre weave on the rear cover and roof and very deep RDS that were really too deep to remove completely. A test section was completed and it was immediately evident that the colour od the car transformed from a milky cream to a nice gloss white but the paint was ad hard as nails needing a lot of work to remove the smallest of paint/defects. The process was as follows. Clarke would go first with the DA using a megs burgundy pad and Menz intensive polish. This was purely to remove the dull surface coating and any minor swirl marks. I then followed with the Rotary using 3M Fast Cut plus on a yellow pad then refining with Ultrafina on a blue waffle. The interior was hovered and leather was cleaned using Raceglaze Leather Cleaner and conditioned using Raceglaze Leather Conditioner. Wheels were waxed using Rim Wax and tyres cleaned using Megs Endurance Gel. Once everything was cleaned and finished the car was wiped down with IPA to remove any oils and residue, Prewax cleaner was Zymol HD Cleanse and the LSP was Raceglaze 42. As the Engine bay was not to be touched with any water it was dry wiped to remove any dust any then dusted off and left for the original look. Now for the afters. And one finally arty shot… Thanks for reading and as usual all C&C welcome.. Thanks Rollo
:applause2: WONDERFUL !! :applause2: One of my all-time favorite cars. My most intense, CRAZY detailing session was done working on an M1. It was the only factory produced BLUE one. At least that was what I was told.
I actually got to take a spin around a So Cal race track in one of those with David Hobbs at the wheel. What a GREAT experience that was, until............the 3rd lap when a hose burst and we did a 360! Nevertheless an unbelievable car--especially considering when it was made!
