HOW DO I CONVINCE a customer that they need something more than just a wash ,it started when i told my mom that i got a few customers this week and what i planned on charging them and doing..the lady is a neighbor with a typical white dodge caravan dont think its even been washed in.. forever but i told my mom i planned on claying it and waxing it she just says OH SHE DOESN'T NEED ANY OF THAT FANCY STUFF JUST WASH IT i tried explaining what it does and stuff but she has no clue/or care about this stuff since i do there cars too ..if i just washed the dirty white van it wont come even half as clean as it should plus drying a car with bumps and no wax coat SUCKS the water doesnt come off with out rubbing the chamois all over the paint..which ultimately leaves them less impressed and less likely to be a return customer..(sorry its so long) what can make uneducated people (in detailing) realize what they really want is this full detail and have it gleaming:support::deadhorse:

man i'm faced with this stuff on a regular basis and it can be very tough to deal with. What i would suggest is to explain to them what it does and you could even do a test spot for them to show them the difference.

Explain to them that wax is what protects the paint from the harsh elements, especially the suns uv rays and how getting a vehicle detailed is part of the vehicles maintenance much like servicing the engine or changing your oil. Simply washing a car will land you to have clear coat failure and oxidation over time and land you in the body shop for a re-paint. In the end even if you get it repainted you still need to detail it again.

If you make sure you know what you are talking about generally people will bite or be more enticed to purchase the higher service you are recommending for them.

    Hope that helps.

i think i can talk her into it but, it just gets on my nerves when i try to explain what im doing just small talk about others cars(not selling the actual customer) and they are like why would they nee dthat they dont go to car shows like you thats a waste....what kinda light will show swirls the best so i can be like LOOK HERE u dont notice these but its stopping any shine to appear no matter how many washes u do

test spots are huge words dont do justice to the uneducated but showing someone what it could look like when your done is a excellent way to persuade a customer. especially when you get into polishing and paint correction

dude, you need to change a market you are aiming at. People who drive dodge caravans usually don't care...I would NOT detail a mini van...

You have to understand that some people just want a clean car. They might never appreciate or notice the difference between a washed Caravan and a fully polished Caravan.

I compare it to gardening. I water my flowers and mow the grass, do a little edging and call it a day. But to someone who is really into that, that might be the equivalent of washing a car with a dirty sponge and drying it with a beach towel.

    See what I mean?

That is a really good example!

It all depends on the market you're trying to reach. The lady with the Grand Caravan, that's been my market. The majority of vehicles I cleaned this summer were minivans, and all they wanted was a clean car. I could sit there and talk about the benefits of a clay and wax (which is all I know how to do right now, as far as exterior details go) all day, and they wouldn't care. They just want it clean. Even as interiors go, I didn't do an all out detail. I made sure to get all the crumbs, etc off the floor and from every crevice I could get with my vacuum. I could charge extra so I could afford an extractor and clean the carpets, but no one would be interested in paying extra for that. So I treated minor carpet stains and that was it. I never said I'd do one thing and then not do it, I was completely honest with what I did. Everyone I did a car for was extremely pleased with the results too :D

It's very difficult to convince people that really don't care. Do you think your average clean up shop tries to explain the same process and importance? Nope. They sell the customer what the customer wants. You my friend actually care about your work, that's why you get irritated. If you rely on this type of customer for income, slowly add something extra here and there to repeat cars and see if they notice. I say perform a normal wash routine then dry it with Duragloss Aqua Wax or Optimum Car Wax. If they notice then begin your sales pitch.

Your best bet is 50/50's and before/after pictures of your work. If they don't understand what you are trying to explain, show it to them.

But, I don't even try to upsell a customer with a beater dd. They drive that car for a reason. And it's not to admire it's perfect paint.

I water my flowers and mow the grass, do a little edging and call it a day. Hey I do all of those , I'm no Martha Steward but I'm proud of my yard:yikes:
