I've been using Collinite 845 for the past little while and am very happy with it, but I'm thinking of changing it up a bit for Summer... maybe try some Powerlock. Anyway, just wondering how easy it would be to strip a couple layers of 845? I have some CG CWG, Dawn and IPA (99%)... would these products be enough to do the job? I don't have a foam gun, or anything fancy like that, so I'm thinking of just doing a wipe down with IPA at 1:1, but not too sure if this dilution will be safe for paint...? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
pm dsms about what ratio of ipa:water would be good for your paint. maybe a wash with a strong mixture of CWG would do it, but not sure. 845 is one tough cookie.
845 is a pita to remove as most Collinite waxes are ... I would wash with CWC or CWG at paint stripping dilution and then spray every panel with Power Clean or Zep Citrus at 3:1 ratio. This will probably remove most of it ... if not, do an IPA wipedown. Leave the IPA on a panel for a minute or two and then wipe off.
Not too sure how different CWG is form CWC, but a buddy of mine, who also uses 845, tried CWC at stripping strength, but water was still beading afterwards. He pretty much gave up after that one wash and just applied another coat of 845.
I washed my car twice with a mix of dawn and megs apc to strip 845. It however was wearing 3 layers applied nearly 6 months ago. I agree 845 is some serious business.
Ppg dx440. You'll be able to pick it up at your local auto paint supply shop. It's my go to when ipa isn't cutting it- simply awesome.
Thanks for the reply guys! I think I'm going to go with slanguage's suggestion and go with a Zep Citrus/Dawn wash. And if that doesn't do it, an IPA wipe down as well. Hopefully that'll do the trick!
you can also go to walmart, and get prep-all (prep-sol). its a wax/tar remover if the soap doesn't work 1st. but try the soap mixture 1st.
I do love me some Collinite 845. The beading is just over the top wicked. I just have seen some problems where the 845 layers "funny", almost leaves streaks even when properly removed. Going over it once with PO85RD fixes it, but it's still an issue I don't have when using a wax. I think it happened when it let it sit for too long once, and had a hard time removing aftwards. Rule of thumb is to not let it cure for more than 1.5 minuntes.
