Welcome Jason to DB. I have a question about your wheel cleaner. For really bad brake dust build up could I let the wheel cleaner sit longer on the wheels? Would that help loosen the really bad soiled wheels?

Racersky. I'm going to give you my opinion on the really bad brake dust question and whoever would like to chime in with their thoughts, please do so.

My experience has been, if the brake dust is bad or heavy, after spraying the cleaner on, once it sets for a few minutes, agitate with a wheel cleaner brush. This moves the Wheel Cleaner (and brake dust) around a bit and allows for more bonding of the sintered iron with the active ingredients in the solution. Then rinse. If you still see some soiled parts, reapply and scrub again. You don't have to completely saturate the rim/wheel, just spot shoot it.

I guess my point is, I don't think the longer the better necessarily works. If you have dirty wheels, the product will turn deep red and if you have dirty German car wheels, it will turn deep red almost purple. That's not from length of time, it's from the amount of iron in the brake dust. Also, I would caution in leaving the product on to long. If it heats up under sunlight or by whatever other means it could do some minor etching in the clear coat.

Another point regarding the SONAX Wheel Cleaner product. SONAX chemists do not believe in Wheel "Gels". They feel as if a Gel has a wasteful "clinging" effect that does not efficiently clean and is wasteful to the consumer. If a gel adheres to the rim/wheel, the only portion of the product that is cleaning is the amount that is immediately touching the surface. The majority of the product that is not touching the surface goes unused or is rinsed away.

I have used Sonax a few times on my GTI wheels and will stay for being a thin liquid it really does stay in place and does not just run off. Really does clean up the dust on the wheels and with the use of a pressure washer almost no need to even bust out my brushes. Looking forward to trying some other products such as dash clean (i think that is the name) and the carpet cleaner.

    Solid advice Jason.

Too add to it, I like to blast the rims with a PW, and depending on how bad they are, wipe off the unadhered brake dust with just water or water+soap and a sponge. It allows the Sonax wheel cleaner to focus it's cleaning ability and really break up the worst of the brake dust, instead of the stuff that isn't really adhered to the wheel yet.

it's kind of odd that I tried wheel brightener at 4:1 dilution and let it sit but didn't do anything. After trying Sonax wheel cleaner half of the wheel came out a lot better than the results from wheel brightener. Maybe I'm using wheel brightener wrong but I must say Sonax Wheel Cleaner is awesome stuff =)

Is this the same Jason I was speaking to earlier in the year about bringing the product in?

[First and foremost, the smell of the Wheel Cleaner. We are in the process of depleting our current stock of 500ml Wheel Cleaner (some of it is in the US and some is in Germany). When that batch is gone, the next batch will be the "New & Improved" formula. My understanding is it will have a nice, lemony or citrus scent. Now, this is brand new product and I haven't received a sample to try. We have been promised over and over again that the effectiveness of the product has not been compromised in the slightest. However, the smell will be much, much better.]

I for one am not too enamoured with the small of hair perm solution, a citrus smell although doing nothing to affect the products efficiency would be a welcome change (strange how detailer’s pay so much attention to the way a car care products smells, especially wax)

Interesting, I beleve the ‘gel’ is purely a psychological effect, “it’s staying on there so it has time to chemically react

I must add Sonax extreme wheel cleaner is the best yet, and it’s hard to beat P21S Wheel Cleaner (422) Red Gel Formula, which is (was) my benchmark wheel cleaning product

I am relieved to see a viable and safe alternative to wheel cleaner that use strong and potentially dangerous acidis like Ammonium bifluoride

    Welcome Jason,

Been using the Sonax Extreme rim cleaner for a few years now and it never fails to impress!

Interesting to hear there is a new formula coming out...Any idea when it will become available? (PS I am in South Africa)

I had the same experience when we tested the Sonax and Meguiars side by side :thumb:

I have no idea when the SONAX Wheel Cleaner with the Lemon Scent will be available in South Africa. I do know the change is very new and an may depend on the amount of product your distributor in South Africa currently has in stock. That is my guess anyway.

My name is Kyle, I remember we were working out the cost per box earlier in the year and things went haywire, so we both opted to wait for the 5 liter canisters.

Jason/Phil, is there any information about when the new formula of the wheel cleaner will be available in the USA from DD.

Jason mentioned availability will depend on production time and depleting stock of the current formula. So, is production up and running and Phil, approximately how long before you run out of the current formula.

    Thanks

Thanks Phil. That's too far off and my rims are too dirty to wait. I will be ordering the current formulation from you. What is most important is the effectiveness of the cleaner, a nice smell...not so much.
