looks like iron cut like sonax turns a red color on contact with metals. sonax does that with the metals in the brake dust

Yeah I used to have a product that did the same thing, think it was from Granitize or Malco, can't remember. Anyhow it had a dye in it that changed color as the pH value changed, nothing to do with the product working at all.

    Chemical Cleaning

Aquartz Iron Cut is a one-step, highly effective car paint decontamination, beyond what can be removed by washing or by using detailer’s clay, Used for the removal of sintered (heat fused) metal particulates, this product has the cleaning power of sulphuric acid but with a pH of 7.0 by using a neutralised acid salt.

Neutralization is the reaction between an acid and a base (alkaline) producing a salt and neutralized base. Common examples include acetic acid and sulphuric acid, when mixed with water cause an exothermic chemical reaction, loosening the sintered ferrous metal particulates, which have been converted entirely to rust and disintegrates forming a miscible emulsion that can be rinsed away. It starts off green, then red and then to blood red. Allow to dwell for a minute, agitate and rinse.

If you are familiar with detail clay, you know it is capable of removing above surface contaminants that have bonded to the paint surface. This product is designed to remove what lies below the paint surface. Airborne chemical compounds and ferrous particles containing iron actually penetrate the paint and create corrosive compounds that eat deep into the paint's substrate. This is a gradual process that often is not evident until it's too late.

Brake dust and the brake shoe adhesives become sintered to the vehicles paint and wheel surfaces due to the high temperature conditions they are normally exposed to. Brake dust contains high levels of iron and pad adhesive and once sintered to the rim, becomes extremely difficult to dissolve or remove without the use of harsh chemicals.
Automotive paint is porous, by using an acid salt solution on the paint surface the micro-fissures (‘pores’) are expanded by an exothermic reaction (heat is evolved when water and acid mix together) This releases ferrous particles and caustic compounds that have developed in the paint's subsurface means it agitates and loosens the particles allowing them to be rinsed away. Ongoing damage is immediately stopped and future damage is prevented by removing the ferrous particles.

Aquartz Iron Cut sprays on as a thick, transparent liquid, as the cleansing liquid begins to work into the ferrous iron particles the formula begins to turn purple/ red. The purple/red coloration is the acid salt forming a bond to the sintered iron on the car paint and wheel and changing its state to a water soluble complex for easy removal. Stubborn, baked on brake dust may take a small amount of agitation. Rinse car paint and wheels thoroughly with a power washer and wipe dry.

Is it safe to assume that this product performs the same function as the valugard or fk decon systems?

  7. Wow, next time I have an extra 3 days I will read this cats write-up. Gordon needs to mix in some hand lotion and a manicure into his routine :what:

Yes but as a 'one-step' system as opposed to three, plus the netrelized chemicals are 'safe'

does a decon kit replace claying?

It depends what is stuck on the car. Can replace claying sometimes but Most of the time, i still pick up quite abit when I clayed at step 3, but I realise there is a big difference in water sheeting when i do or don't do the ABC steps.

    Hi Jon
thank you for the well chemistry process explainations.

So what he means to say is "No, the Decon kit will not replace claying." :)

I'll try to explain it differently, as they both perform different functions-

    Stages of Corrosive Paint Damage

Stage One- Iron particulates causing surface staining leading to substrate corrosion
Stage Two - Contaminants have permeated the paint matrix causing discoloration and corrosion damage
Stage Three - Particulates and corrosive compounds causing severe damage to the paints resin (binder) system

    a) Detailer's clay - removes paint surface contaminents i.e. it abrades the top section of an iron particle, leaving what is below the paint surface to remain. Once water and heat (reactivity) is added the corrosion process is started

    b) Iron Cut - the imbedded (below paint surface) iron particles are released by the exothermic reaction between the acid and moisture, the heat opens the miro-pores of the paint, thus releasing the iron particules, allowing them to be rinsed away.

Some have suggested using detailer's clay in tandem with Iron Cut, the acid salts will tend to soften it, which may cause problems

    Reactivity

[: acceleration of a chemical reaction by a catalyst]

Surface temperature will dictate reactivity (acceleration of a chemical reaction by a catalyst [moisture and heat] the rate of any chemical reaction doubles with every 20.0F increase in temperature above standard (70.oF)

    Exothermic Reaction

[: an exothermic reaction is a chemical reaction that is accompanied by the release of heat]

An exothermic reaction is a chemical reaction that is accompanied by the release of heat i.e. neutralization reactions such as direct reaction of acid and base In other words, the energy needed for the reaction to occur is less than the total energy released. As a result of this, the extra energy is released, usually in the form of heat.

    I hope this helps
