Well, I finally took the plunge into DSLR ownership...

Yesterday I picked up a Canon 30D and an EFS 17-85mm IS lens....

I am pretty geeked and all I could do last night was play with it...lol

Now time to spend vast amounts of time learning about it...

Jason..Congrats! And get yourself a tripod if you don't have one already. The difference with the DSLR is that you can take longer exposure shots than with some point and shoot cameras. Your pics will turn out better.

^ that and the sensor size.

Great purchase - this will do a lot to increase the quality of your shots on all vehicles you work on greatly. We all know how important it is to have accurate photos that truly show off the work we do.
Congrat's and I look forward to seeing how some pics turn out!

congrats on your new camera! If I might share a few links with you, I've found these to be a great, valuable resource when learning new things or new ways to shoot:

The Photo Argus - A Photographer's Resource (awesome website with some great resources to other photography sites that should help you on your photography quest)
Digital Photography Tips: Digital Photography School
fredmiranda.com: Specialized in Canon - Nikon SLR Cameras, Forum, Photoshop Plugins, Actions, Reviews, Hosting and Digital Darkroom
Strobist (some really excellent information here with regards to shooting with multiple flash units once you get there!)

so many more but that's a great start right there.

^^To add to those, my all time favorite photography resource is Photography-On-The-Net (POTN). A photography forum specifically for Canon users. You can discuss camera bodies, lenses, accessories, different types of shooting (sports/people/portraits/urban/motorsports/B&W/misc...), as well as buy/sell used equipment. I used to frequent that multiple times per day. Honestly I'd say it's more useful than DB or autopia or any other detailing forum I've ever been a part of. TONS of great info there.

No problem. Should have added a disclaimer though. If you go on there, you will suddenly realize how much more equipment you need. Much like this forum, but worse lol.

quoted for the f*cking truth. You think detailing is an expensive hobby? Try collecting lenses lol.

Great score Jason. I have a lowly rebel xt. I primarily want to upgrade to something that performs well at 1600+ ISO.

Lol yup. Nothing is worse than the photography bug. 70-200mm 2.8 IS = ~$1800. Detailing supplies for the year lol. The good thing is they hold their resale value pretty well, if you take care of them. The XT isn't that bad. As for good performer's at 1600+, I picked up a 40d as an upgrade to my XTi, and found it to be a noticeable difference. But then the rest of the XXd series, they just kept cramming more and more pixels onto the same size sensor, ISO improvements have pretty much stalled :( Unless you want to move up to the 5d or 1d...$$$$

    Congrats Jason ...

I really want to get one for the family and to take detailing pics ... but I think it's gonna go the same way as my detailing bug. I started with a bottle of opti-seal and now I have two full storage places with detailing supplies.
