Time to necromance Brendan's thread.

I fear that it's time for me to replace my trusty, albeit way too big, Ridgid vacuum. It's powerful enough, but holy cow, it's loud. I've been considering replacing it for quite some time now. Finally, one of the accessories cracked when I dropped it on a cold day, and the hose is full of cuts and holes and covered in duct tape. And the filter is shot. So, rather than buy a new hose, filter, and accessories, I figure I might be better off just buying a new vacuum and be done with it.

This "Pro Pack" unit seems like a pretty awesome solution. I like how self-contained the whole thing is, without hoses and extensions and accessories flopping around all over the place. Is this the one that you guys have observed is actually pretty powerful?

I've looked for the 4070 that some folks have said they really like, but can't track it down on Home Depot's US website. Maybe it's a Canada-only item. Seems strange.

A final observation. My experience has been that when shopping for spare parts for a Ridgid, you're stuck with their own parts. Majestic Solutions had a really nice replacement hose available for most any vacuum, and I bought it. Got it home, and it was too small for my Ridgid - apparently Ridgid uses some kind of non-standard hose size. Phil @ MS told me this was a common complaint.

Anyway, just wondering what follks like now, or if anyone has bought a new vac in the last couple months and would like to share their experiences. I've no brand loyalty in this regard - Shop-Vac, Craftsman, Ridgid, whatever. I'm after powerful, somewhat small, and it has to be wet/dry, and would like to stay around $100USD. So no Metros for me.

    Thanks!

So here's a new player I hadn't heard of until today - Vacmaster. Costco has a 14 gallon one, on wheels, that claims to have 60" of water lift. I was hoping to avoid another gigantic vac, but this seems like a decent choice.

I wonder how easy - or difficult - it is to find replacement parts like filters for Vacmaster.

He wants a wet/dry vac. Can't wet vac with a metro.

Yeah, I've considered one. Trouble is, at least as far as I can tell, the Metro is not to be used in wet situations. That's kind of a problem. I don't want to ruin it while sucking up rinse water out of carpeting. And, for the occasion that I need to use it around the house, it would be nice to have wet vac ability. I've had a hot water heater crap out on me once, and I wouldn't be without a wet vac again in that situation. "Regular" wet/dry vacuums are simply more versatile.

95" of water lift, though...that's a lot. And the Metro is nice and portable.

Love my Ridgid and probably my favorite piece of equipment I own. I even vacuum my house with it.

Little test: vacuum your carpet properly, like you normally do. Put about a half an inch of water in your Ridgid tank. Then vacuum the carpet again with your Ridgid. Open up the lid, and see how much more shite you were able to remove.

    It was quite a shock.

You sound like the Oreck vacuum guy haha.

I have been shopping around for a small shop vac and thinking of going with Ridgid once they go on sale for I found a HD coupon haha....what can I say...I am cheap.

I love my Metro! I have a separate extractor (Bissell LGM Proheat) that works okay for now.

Found the Ridgid 4070 on Amazon. Really strange that it's nowhere to be found on Home Depot's website. I'm gonna run down there in a minute and see if different models are available in store.

The trip was successful. I found the 4070 in stock at the local Home Depot. Really strange that I can't find it on their website, but whatever. Looks like it's the follow-on product to the 4050; it's got wheels, but the packaging and specs seem to be pretty much the same. At the moment, it is my front runner.

They did *not* have the Pro Pack toolbox-looking thing in store, which was a disappointment, because I'd really like to see one of those in person. Of course, even if they had them, I might not be able to mess around with it anyway. They've got all their floor models ziptied to the display, way up high out of reach. You know. So people can't stealthily steal a 16 gallon shop vac. :shakehead:

I'd have no problem buying another Ridgid. This current one is ten years old now, and I've never been especially nice to it. It gets knocked down, kicked, used to vacuum up leaves and various other garage detritus, I think I even used it on a fish tank a long time ago. So certainly I've gotten my money's worth out if it.

Costco was disappointing. They had a wall-mount Shop-Vac unit and a smaller, much lower powered, inexpensive regular Shop-Vac. Neither of which looked exciting.

There weren't any fish in it. ;) Just old gravel. Made moving the tank around a lot easier, but the vacuum smelled AWFUL for about a week.

HD has the 4070 for $80, regular price, no coupon or anything. Amazon has it at $100. Which surprised me - it's not often I find much of anything being sold at a better price than Amazon.

Still dont know what I am going to pick up. Parents saw one as costco in Charlotte for $50, steel canister, extra attachments...going to go home this weekend and going to check it out. Dont need a huge one, so looking at small/med range.
