Well, I stumbled onto another server box during my road trip adventures. It's going to undergo some extensive upgrades, but when it's done I don't have too much of a purpose for it other than some light development work I can test locally. Are there any PC gamers who would like a game server where they can have a say in mods, map rotation, server variables/things like that? It should be able to run any game, and I have a fair amount of bandwidth I can share. Specs for the nerds Dual 3.2Ghz Xeon CPUs (not dual core, dual CPUs (These will be overclocked a bit)) 4GB ECC Registered RAM 4x72GB SCSI drives striping and mirrored for redundancy SBS 2003 with a dual cpu license (May switch to a linux platform -- still up in the air) Let me know if there's anything you're after. I have extensive knowledge with settting up Steam based dedicated servers, but I'm willing to figure others out also.
I'm mainly a FPS kinda guy; I spend a lot of time in TF2 and L4D2. That's a nice find, did it cost you anything?
It was given to me as a single CPU 2.0GHz with 256 MB of RAM. I spent $115 on the rest of the components to bring it up to dual CPU 3.2GHz and 4GB of RAM. I DID wire his whole house for Cat-6 networking, keystone jacks with plugs in the wall.... the whole nine yards. Even took his rackmounted components and built a mini-rack in a closet in the fishtank room. (the fishtank room is insane, he tore down a big wall and a put a huge tank in the wall... all the filters and skimmers and refuges and everything are in the room.) So his network is rock solid and good to go! Pretty pleased with the results. I also did a paint correction on my wife's car while I was there
CPUs should be here Monday! Who knows when the HSF and clips will show up from the UK.... Hm. I'll make a build post when they come in
I fiddle around with PC games occasionally, but I'm not very good at them. The couple times I've tried the online thing was with Counter Strike, or whatever the one was that came with Half Life 2. I always got clobbered so badly by the other players that I got frustrated and quit. Kind of hard to get better at it when all you do is get killed all the time. I also used to play WoW some, and I eventually got somewhat good at it. Enough that I didn't hate it, anyway. At about that time, they released a new expansion pack, and all of my spells and whatever were gone. I kept my level, but it was like starting over, having to relearn all that stuff. I quit the next day.
