I'm in the middle of class zoning out and I was wondering if we could do a pro's and con's list for clay and decon. I've never used a decon kit, does it do the same job as clay? If so, wouldn't it be faster and more economical to just use a decon kit?

Comes down the the way it pulls contamination. Clay is like shaving, just cuts the Fe metal bits off the surface, and decon is like waxing, pulls the whole bit of metal out of the clear. Really a deep cleaning process with a type of acid. Works really well to neutralize acid rain so it does not come back. Clay is faster, I can clay a car in about 15 min start to fin. With decon you have to remember to use it properly and not let some parts sit on too long and dry on the paint surface or you made a oopsi.

If you ave to do alot of cars that are really trashed then decon is the way to go, but if it is just a few cars the contamination is not that bad then clay will be faster and cheaper.

i would save decon kits for trashed cars. would be a good kit to use after the winter months

A clay in fifteen minutes seems optimistic, unless you're speaking of a well maintained car. I might pick up a decon kit when I get a new car and try it out.

On a new car it is good idea as you have lots of steel bits from transportation on rail and really gives it a deep clean from the start. It is also great on white cars as on whites you can see Fe dust imbeded into the clear and get iron clouds (yellowish in color). 15-20 min to clay my GTI is what it normally takes me.

Yeah that's what I thought you were talking about. A well maintained GTI isn't a lot of territory plus I'm sure yours is very well maintained.

Comes down to a judgment call, if the paint really feels like sandpaper and you start claying and it is taking forever to just do a panel then its time to bust out the decon kit.

I have been using a decon kit from Valu guard for a few years and I love it. Like stated above, on white cars, it is really valuable. You may still need to clay even after it depending on what is on the paint. Here is one I did that was just plain nasty and needed both. I highly recommend the kit even if you only use it once in a blue moon.
