so back around thanksgiving a girl bumped my drivers door requiring a whole new door. Since the door was getting painted, i had the whole front end painted to fix a few rick chips.

So, After the paint was done the shop said I need to wait 30 days before I wax the car.... They said, and I quote, "Bring the car back in 30 days so we can inspect the paint for shrinkage and fix any issues".

To be honest, i dont really wanna go back to the evil body shop and i believe anything they can do during this "Inspection", I can do myself.

So what exactly are they going to do during this "Inspection"?

Also, the car was already wetsanded and buffed, But not to DetailingBliss.com Standards so I need to take care of this light orange peel that is still left there asap..... Do you guys think I should just wetsand the panel more or try polishing first? If I should just wetsand the panel more, what grits should i do the paint with. The car has zero orange peel before it went to the shop, so it looks odd.

Any advice will be very appreciated

wow. never heard that one before. I have heard about the waxing thing to allow the paint time to cure but some shops do not practice that method. That leaves weather it's true or not at your discretion.

As for them buffing it i'm sure that they left some swirls or buffer trails in there some place since most shops do . . . . . not all though.

Someone will chime in regarding this but from what i have seen you will want to use something along the lines of 1500 grit paper and work up from there jumping to 2000 grit and possibly even finishing it down with 2500 grit then proceed to polish.

Just make sure to use a sanding block for even sanding and pre soak the paper for at least a good 15 minutes prior to use.

to my amazement, the shop did a pretty good job of the buffing and left minimal defect, just a few light swirls.

.... But there is a slight orange peel. Its not bad, but it wasnt there before. I am wondering if they were planning on wetsanding more after the 30 days....

Take it to them and sit there with them if they are worth anything they probably have some kind of warranty on the paint work so if further down the line something fails you can take it to them to fix it. If you don't take it to them they can us that as a means to denythe warranty. As for the peel they won't sand it down that was something I would have addressed a the time of delivery. But who knows ithink you guys in Cali have to use water paints and I don't know anything about them.

Cliffs: just take it don't let them buff or wax if that's all they are going to do

no wax for at least 30 days. this has been discussed in another topic. as for the orange peel i would ask them to wetsand it out. since you yourself did not paint the car theres no way of knowing how much clear they put on so wetsanding it yourself is risky. I would have them do it that way if they mess up, they will be liable.

I would take it back for the inspection, but not for the wetsanding ... Try to find someone with a paint meter so you can actually measure the paint thickness before doing any wetsanding.

The same clear coat is used still, even with the waterbased color coat.

not in cali, as of 2009 all paints, including clear coats have been switched to waterborne. cali state law. i was just at my friends body shop today and saw them paint a truck with it. looks weird when first painted, looks like it will dry horrible but comes out nice.

hope the orange peel is not in the color and only in the clear. especially if they mixed waterborne and solvent based paint

You are correct, PPG has the waterborne clear now. Here in NY its only the color coat.
