I think this just stole my detailing money for the next few months. I was currently looking for a laptop for school but I think this product will be much better. Since I never do any real heavy computing at school anyways, just surfing the net, music, videos. I think it will be perfect especially if I can buy my school books on it.

Check it out it's on apples site now! Keynote should be uploaded a little later on.

I am pretty bummed that there was no annoucement on the new OS for the Iphone. I was hoping they would have at least said something about 4.0. Oh well.

Do you really think this product by Apple will last? It is supposed to come in at around $500. You can get a high end netbook these days for $350ish...

Yeah oh well they will probably wait for 4.0 after it is the iPad is released to the public. Or until June with the new iPhone.

Of course I think it will last as Steve said "netbooks are just cheap laptops" they do nothing better, but actually worse. They are nothing really new. If you need a laptop for computing power than I am sure you wouldn't get a netbook anyhow. Plus this is full touchscreen even more portable, and has 3G connectivity and a prepaid plan to go with it. For 150 more I think it is more than worth it. That is nothing especially for an apple product. If this had turned out to be an 800 product than I would probably consider netbook/macbook instead. But being the price it is has really swayed me, along with the relatively cheap 3g plans.

Honestly I don't know if I even need a laptop after this release. I think from now on it will be my desktop and the iPad. I see no real use for a laptop really? Unless someone can give me a reason I am not thinking of? I only used my laptop at school to honestly cruise the internet and fool around while the teacher was talking haha. Plus I can probably buy my books from the iTunes store now less to carry. Man I am excited about this product.

I like this quote from Gizmodo it perfectly says what I have been thinking.

"It's the "internet device" vision of a decade ago all over again, except now Apple can offer what is arguably the best user experience for internet and media consumption combined with a very reasonable (for a brand new gadget) price.

It may not be good for you, because you're an internet dork who wants to do heavy video editing or run Photoshop. (Or, you know, multitask.) But for the average person off the street walking into a Best Buy, their laptop money may now be going to an iPad.

What happens when they find the iPad is all they needed in the first place? They never buy a laptop again."

so does the touchscreen turn into an awkward keyboard? That's really the only reason I wouldn't like it.

I need to buy a computer for home first. I only use teh one at work, then use my phone at home.

Ahhh yeah if you don't have a desktop that could be a problem. But you can buy either the keyboard made for the iPad or the bluetooth one to type on as well. But if I didn't have a desktop and could only get one device I would probably still stick with a laptop. It's more universal.

The one that attaches to the iPad. (bluetooth keyboard I am pretty sure you know what that looks like so no picture for that haha. It's just a wireless version of the one pictured)

For someone who has a top of the line laptop and an iPhone, where would this fit in for me?

i was thinking of picking one up, I would say its more of a cool factor.

I'm installing parallels into my macs at home now to reduce the amount of laptops and computer in my life lol

i was on the fence, I needed a portable solution, but contemplated waiting for the ipad to hit shelves. I ended up just getting a macbook and spending a little coin on upgrades (SSD, ram, processor) I got it last week and I'm super pleased (I already had a 24" imac at home) Now that I've seen the announcement I'm glad I went the way I did... this has less computing power than a notebook and only a marginal amount more portability. Other than the asthetics it offers nothing I need that I can't do with either my macbook.

What it comes down to is it's a status symbol, just kind of like how most people buy Apple's for that reason. I'm sure it's a great innovation but you have to admit that a lot of people simply buy it just to look cool and don't really use the devices to their full potential.

Umm, this looks like a giant iPhone.

I'll stick with my iPhone and my MacBook for my portable computing needs. I just don't see where this product has an actual useful place in people's lives. At least with a Netbook you get a real Windows OS and a real keyboard. This is literally just like a giant iPhone that can't make phone calls.

But I think it will definitely sell....it just won't sell to me.

At first i wanted one pretty bad, but then i thought about it and decided that its not for me...however this would be perfect for someone like my mom. why? well its easy first off, she can check her mail, surf the web, read books and watch movies....on the go, she doesnt need a laptop sure she can use an iphone or ipod touch, but lets be honest older people (like her) have a hard time seeing things and hitting the keys with accuracy much less use the damn thing to its full potential. Case in point, one day my dad asked my brother how to use an ipod, so they went to best buy, bought an ipod, and my brother showed my dad how to download torrents (easy enough for you and me) however he tried it once, and said this was too complicated. His ipod sat for a year when i asked him why he didnt use it, he said it was a pain in the ass, and i asked him why. So i showed him how to use itunes instead and now he loves the damn thing. This is what the iPad was made for, for people like my parents who arent the techno-saviest.

one thing for sure is i wonder what new and cool things jailbreaking this thing will do

oh and twitter is full of iTampon jokes...lol

Pretty much how I see it. Too pricey for what it is I think.

If you're a geek (or at least technically inclined and willing to try new things) you can install OS-X on a MSI Wind netbook (used for ~$250.) Better choice all around IMO, I've been using this setup for more than a year, just need to add an SSD and I'll be set for another couple years.
