Nothing to do at work

So I have literally nothing to do at work right now. All jobs in progress are done and out the door, jobs pending are waiting customer approval on the proof before we get it going (I don't deal with customers) and all my maintenance and 6S/LEAN bullcrap is caught up.

Reddit has bored me to the point I've read most of the articles
    Clientsfromhell.com has made me laugh
    DB is a bit slow
NASIOC was good for a few laughs

Anyone have any web projects or something? I've been thinking on reworking my image hosting site (via it's so crappy, lol)

Maybe make some small CSS changes on my website.

    Hm.

Pandora is still rockin' on my Blackberry.

I'm about to go find somewhere to hide, cuddle up and take a nap.

I just got done designing my first ad. Full front page in the local paper. Since the boss is out of town, it was delegated to me. Kind of nerve-racking to put ideas out there like that.

You should send it to me for suggestions. I work in the print industry so I can toss some ideas out there. I see some really crappy designs and some fantastic ones all day long.

Which reminds me, yearbook season is soon. Talk about HILARITY.

Ty, I say you make a huge sign and drive around that says everyone who gives me a $1 wins a prize...and see how many people give you a $1 and report back. Ok so maybe bad idea but off to lunch!

Oh god, I know my school yearbooks were pretty decent as they normally won some awards but knowing people on the staff I got to see some other schools and know what you mean from design to some of the things that are said in the personal ads in the back and what not.

Highschool yearbooks are the worst designs I have ever seen. Every year. Any school.

We actually have long meetings with them telling them to use InDesign instead of Publisher so it's easier on our end. They end up using Publisher anyways and then we have to bill them an extra $5,000 for all the work it takes to make them go through our workflows and crap.

Yearbooks are hell for everyone involved.

Sure thing. As soon as the god-awful "design" people take my rough sketch and do the prelim ad, I can email you a copy of it. Keep in mind I have absolutely NO background in graphic design, marketing, etc. I don't even have any idea how much space I have once all my scribbles are converted to type. I was hit with this yesterday before the boss left. She says, make something for the front page that comes out THIS SUNDAY. And that's it. Leaves for 2 days. So, here I go. The newspaper rep is supposed to be here in a few minutes to pick it up.

Not a problem! I'll help any way I can. We don't do much newspaper print here as we don't have a web press -- but we print for everything else.

To give you an idea of how terrible at this I am, here is what I'm giving the newspaper guy. Just a jumpoff point, and many revisions over the next day and a half before it goes to print:

I've seen worse. When they get the copy typed up and shuffle things around I can help with some slight changes. Decent use of available space. You may want to see if you can make the pictures a bit larger and have some text overlap some way. People are attracted to pretty colors more than they are text.

At first I had 6 pictures, 3 on each side. But I eliminated one, and centered teh middle pic, to create a natural break, so the text didn't get too cumbersome to read.

I like the idea of some text overlap. This may turn out better than I expected :D

If you're around, Ty, shoot me your email address. I just got the first proof.

And this is how it turned out. Not bad for my first try from scratch. Much thanks to Ty for helping out with some formatting suggestions. It looks a lot better:
