I have a Mustang coming on Friday that has flat black paint on the hood and rear deck lid. The customer wants the paint sealed but I'm afraid that if I put DG 105 on it then it may cause the paint to have some gloss which obviously I don't want. Has anyone had any experience with flat paint? Can it be buffed or will that induce a shine?
Matte or Satin Finish Paint Do not polish or wet-sand a matte clear, as the flattening agents that cause the matte appearance (textured finish) by diffuse reflection are retained very close to the surface. By levelling the surface the light will be reflected evenly and result in a ‘shine’. Use a rotary polisher and an ultra soft, zero abrasive cut (Lake County CCS Concourse Gold (100 PPI) foam pad) with a mild chemical paint cleaner/ polish (Zaino Z-AIO - All in One) it will remove surface marring and leave it flat and dull. Use a clear polymer (Zaino Z-CS - Clear Seal) to provide surface protection
Dont get any kind of polish near the flat paint. It'll put a shine on it instantly. I would even go so far as to tape it off if you are polishing around it.
On Jeep hardtops, I have had good luck using Zymol Carbon. It makes the surface just a bit less flat, but it still looked good, just something to think about.
Know this is a little out of the scope, price wise, but I tried Swissvax Insignis on my flat black vinly and it did not change the look at all. Ketil said it would work well on matte paints so I tested it out and came out looking good on test samples.
