BREAKING: Schumacher likely to return to F1 racing with Mercedes

by Frank Filipponio (RSS feed) on Nov 20th 2009 at 2:26PM

Say it ain't so, Schu! The Daily Telegraph is reporting that seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher is close to signing on with the newly formed Mercedes Formula 1 team. Mercedes is the new name of the former Brawn GP team, the current Constructors Champion. After a stellar rookie season that saw this former Honda team clinch not just the Constructors Championship, but also the Drivers Championship for Jenson Button, they had a bit of a dropoff as Button bolted for rival McLaren.

That left a seat to fill at Mercedes and if BBC Sport's Eddie Jordan is to be believed, none other than Michael Schumacher is about to sign a one-year contract to return to racing in that very car. The deal, which would net Schumacher the same salary that Button turned down at Brawn GP in favour of McLaren, would finally see the German teaming up with Mercedes, who were in the past unsuccessful in their bids to lure him away from Ferrari.

Ferrari almost lured the retired champ back this season when Felipe Massa went down following the infamous spring incident in Hungary. The Champ's sore neck put a stop to that comeback, but apparently it got Schumi's juices flowing again. Signing with Mercedes would create something of a German dream team with Nico Rosberg in the other car. If the deal goes through, MS will be reunited with Brawn GP-namesake and current Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn, the man who guided Michael to all seven of his World titles.

Still just a rumor for the moment, the deal is said to give Schumacher the same salary Button turned down when he defected to McLaren. The Schumacher deal is just the latest volley in the silly season melee that has seen Kimi Raikkonen vacate his seat in order to make room for Fernando Alonso at Ferrari, which lost adviser Michael Schumacher as well. Whatever the future holds, it is only going to get more interesting. We'll keep you posted as things develop. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

If only, if only. If Schumi makes a comeback F1 would explode with excitement and anticipation...would be insane!!!

I'm crossing my fingers hoping it happens :beg:

This would turn the F1 would around as well as all the Ferrari boys who thought Schumi would never part ways with Ferrari...if he does come back I will be looking forward to see how he does.

Mercedes in F1 is a plus, Shumi back in F1 a plus. A German dream team would be a huge plus. I really think next season is going to be a whole lot of Vettel though.

I agree with you, it's mind blowing how skilled Vettel is and a wicked driver but Hamilton isn't so bad...don't have a favorite driver yet but just can't get enough of Formula 1, the vehicles, performance, technology mind blowing I tell ya :thumb:

Can anyone explain why Nico Rosberg is so "special"?

Many F1 fans are at a loss of words why he is so hyped up, personally I fell he is a good driver but has not been given a fair chance, But I also feel he is highly over rated.

But from my point of view nico is sought after to be great from his karting results and his time in gp2.

I believe that Rosberg was faster than Hamilton in his days of karting

It may explain a bit but not everything, I also believe the new Mercedes team is hunting for a all German driver , Haug denies it but it very obvious they are trying to get all German's. Brawn wanted to keep button, but orders from Mercedes told Button to seek employment elsewhere.

How do you feel Ferrari will shape up with Alonso and Massa? I can see these two going at each other already.

Yes they have a bit of rough history, but Massa can be slightly immature at times, that also goes for Alonso. but Alonso after his Mclaren days has matured quite a bit.

It goes back to the Mclaren Season

Majority of the people know that Hamilton had more pace than Alonso, Alonso claimed unequal treatment, Many still believe Hamilton was given a far superior car. not true. As of this year Alonso has made statements like one a while ago were he stated he was the most consistent drive in F1 but claimed he was not the fastest. Alonso knew Lewis was faster but could not admit it because he has a big ego(but so does everybody in F1)

One proof of this was in Monaco where Alonso was in 1st and ended up first but Lewis was catching him with tremendous amounts, but Lewis was told to back down and take seconed place even though he would have won the race.

My feeling is it is going to go sour because Massa will go to the media and say very stupid stuff all year long(as of recently his comments have been :crasy:) and he will not play second fiddle if he has to he will cry about it and not hold it back. Lewis got screwed by Alonso more than once but Lewis to me is not a tiking time bomb like Massa he has no hesitation saying anything. Alonso has made it clear and has demanded he be the number one, he would have not signed if it is not promised, but Massa aint gonna play the seconed fittle. I believe it will hurt Ferrari in a very bad way this year.

You know, this may be a bit of topic but this has been bugging me for a bit now.

What's the purpose of Formula 1? I mean Button won the World Champ tittle but besides that what else is there to win, I mean what's in it for Brawn? Is it bragging rights? Is there a cup, money, price?

Don't get me wrong I think Formula 1 is mind blowing, convoluted and controversial as heck but when I hear and see the vehicles and the times the drivers are posting I forget about all the other stuff I read but I just don't get what the point of it is? Besides all those involved in Formula 1 are insanely rich.

Any one know or care to enlighten me :peace:
