I bought my brand new 2010 Mazda3 for 19k out the door, used cash4clunkers and got the 4500, so my payments are down to $270 a month. I financed through Mazda (Citibank) and got 3%. My friend Matt has an 07 GTI and it's seen about 30k. While I know he doesn't take as much care as I do, it still hasn't held up very well - he had a headlight replaced for $600...one...single...headlight. We both have manuals, the GTIs is REALLY light to shift with but has a long throw, the pattern is REALLY narrow, and the clutch is kinda heavy.

This Mazda has been the EASIEST manual to drive, for what that's worth. Not sure if you've settled on transmission options. Here in Texas, you can get a 2009 Mazdaspeed 3 for around $20k and it'll have low miles, which is DEFINITELY the deal I'd go for.

I'm EXTREMELY happy with it and it's been a great car (upgraded from a Cavalier...blugh!)

Also, I saw some posts mentioning build quality, suspension, etc.

This car was built as a simple econo-box. That being said, the suspension is quite literally amazing for what it is. I've driven this for 5k and in my friend's GTI for many a road trip and car-pool. They feel almost exactly the same under normal driving conditions, and the only difference we both agree on is that the Mazda3 has a bit more body-roll in corners under high speed. I have the 2.0L model and power isn't exactly bountiful, but it is very quick. We also both agree that the interior build quality is on the EXACT SAME LEVEL - the only thing I can see is that the seats in the GTI have a more flat appearance. The bolsters on the Mazda3 are a little more aggressive (across all models, not just the MZ3)

A note on the MZ3's "power" problems - there IS a limited slip option, but it's hard to find. The traction control does a good job of controlling torque steer, with a slight pull to the right at ~6k RPM.

So just went to a local Mazda dealer and drove the 2010 Mazda3 Hatchback S Sport and fell in love with it. It had everything I wanted in it, color and all. I didn't take any action today but I walked out able to negotiate $2,000 off sticker price which ended up being around $19,100. I feel like I might be able to negotiate just a bit more. The other thing is they are offering 2.9% for 60 months and I would not have to make a payment until February. Definitely considering this...

Alright so here is the deal. I just went to lunch to think about things and really get things straight. I have decided that I am going to change my whole outlook on this. After just getting a job that I think will last me for years to come ( I hope) that it will be smarter for me to substantially reduce my price range in choosing a car. I am going to be looking in the range of anywhere between $10-$12K. I am doing this because one I really want to save a lot of money away both personal savings and 401k and I also want to save for a down payment on a small home so I can get out of my families house in the near future. Just trying to be smart about things and get my priorities in line. As much as I want a new or relatively new car that is fun and sporty, I will have plenty of time in life to do that. Not saying it wont be possible with the new price range but might be a little harder. Keeping my car search in this price range will allow me to save a lot more. Any ideas of quality cars within this price range? hahaha

good thinking. if you reduced you price range i would say change cars you looking at too. i would not get any mazda since they werent that reliable couple years back to fall into your range. maybe get civic or fit? if you looking for something with space? they good with fuel and stuff and pretty cheap to mantain and reliable. but check consumer report to see what you can get, my mom has 02 civic and we didnt had problems with it yet.

RSX. They can be had for around that price. Those motors are bulletproof unless you really **** up big time.

I own a 2007 Mazdaspeed3. Love the damn thing. I drove my sister's 2010 Mazda3s Sport 5-door from StL to Boston in 18 hours. Averaged 28mpg doing 75-80mph. The new 2.5L engine is nice. I've gotta say, i was really impressed with the MZ3.

FYI, torque steer is essentially a non-issue with the MS3 since torque is limited in the first 2 gears.

Substantially reducing your price range is indeed a very smart thing. Not only am I sick of my car payment, I was dumb enough to buy a new motorcycle so I have that payment as well.

Oh yeah, since we're on a detailing forum, I have to share that my MS3 Cosmic Blue paint is crazy thin! This singlehandedly killed my enthusiasm for detailing.
