I'm home this weekend and I went to visit my friend and parked in his college dorm parking lot for about 10 minutes. I left and drove off for about 2 minutes and noticed I had a ticket and reached out and grabbed it, whatever, it was probably 15 dollars and I didn't care. IT WAS $175

It says No Valid Permit Displayed and next to it the officer wrote Prem. Spaces. This is a private college and they have their own small police force. I do not go there, and they don't have my vehicle registered. In fact, the vehicle is my Mom's. I know the other private college doesn't pursue their private parking tickets but IDK if this one does or not. This is really hard to afford for me right now, do you guys think I have to pay?

If u don't plan on going there anymore, just don't pay it.

But if you get another ticket, they'll tow your car.

I don't, it was a one-time thing. I don't go to the college. It's my Mom's car I was driving though and I don't really want to tell her because she'll make me pay it, but if I don't the only threat is it doubles. It would have been much cheaper if they towed my car.

i think its nothing to worry about. at my school, Montclair State University, there are actual cops who patrol the campus, but the people who give out the tickets are just a few fat guys in an old beat up red pickup truck. It seriously a joke. If you're not a student or have you plates registered with them for parking you have nothing to worry about (If its like the parking at my school) If the actual cops wrote it up then you might have a problem.

if anything say you didnt ever see the ticket on your car

It was a Moravian University Officer that wrote the ticket, I know because his car was in the lot but no one was in it, when I came back in 10 minutes it was gone. I really don't wanna pay 175, but I don't want it to double and have to pay 350.

damn looks like ur in a bit of a pickle, (I hate pickles :gross:) but anyways id say ask your friend if he or she knows about the parking at the school, most people at my school know that the $60 tickets the fat man gives out dont mean squat unless you are a student there. Man im so broke right now $175 looks like $1,750

Bobby ... something similar happened to me when I was in college.

My university issued a ticket and I didn't care 'cause I was in the process of changing my plates. Well, one thing I didn't realized is that they also got a good description of my car and possibly the vin number. When I brought my car to campus the next year I found the freakin' orange booth. I had to paid the ticket no matter what ...

If you don't plan on ever taking the Corolla there, I say don't worry about it. But keep in mind that colleges see this a free money and they will try to f u no matter what.

Well I was driving the Jeep, my Mom's car. And I don't plan on parking there again, but we drive past the college every couple of days. This sucks. I don't know if I should pay or not, 175 dollars is a lot of money to me.

When I got a parking ticket at another college I called them up and said i dont go there and how to pay and they said the first one will be forgiven as I do not go to school there.

Thanks. I went and talked to one guy, he was really nice but just the way he acted I could tell I pretty much had to pay it, I think they might give it to a collection agency idk. I filed an appeal, which was probably stupid but I can't afford $350 if they double it. I could have parked 2 spaces over in handicapped and got a $50 ticket instead, how bs is that. It just seems really unlawful that I can get a $175 ticket for parking in an empty parking lot than getting a 150 dollar one for speeding and putting other peoples lives in danger (I didn't do that but still.)

Not exactly the same but I had a friend that got an out of provice (state for the US guys) speeding ticket that he never paid. He would always bug me that I paid those tickets and called it "a waste of money". Every chance he could rub it in that I was stupid enough to pay for those tickets he would do so.

It was about 9 years later he went to get his first mortgage on a nice little house that he just had to have. Guess who got the last laugh. Turns out the provine he got the ticket in turned the ticket to collections. He claims he never got any letters or calls from the agency but never the less his application for the mortgage was denied and the hoops he had to jump through were many. He never did get that house.

Just pay the ticket. In 9 years I dont want to be saying I told ya so.:graduation:

Was there a sign posted anywhere that stated you couldn't park there without a permit? Or, was there a directional sign pointing to the visitors parking?

Are they legally allowed to give your a ticket? There are places over here that try and use rent a cops to enforce their rules but the actual law means its unenforceable. Ive just ripped it up in their faces and thrown it on the ground (i could get a littering ticket but they are rent-a-cops not real ones)

The look on their face is priceless. Dunno about over there but here many tickets arent worth the paper they were printed on

    DO NOT PAY IT!

i had a similar situation with my own personal car at a SUNY school. The campus police at SUNY schools are actually NY state troopers. I was advised that the only downside of not paying the ticket is i would not be able to get my diploma until it was paid. There are no legal obligations to pay tickets you receive on a college campus unless you attend the school yourself. Just throw it out.

Same goes for my University! If you get a ticket, and you don't pay it, you cannot graduate.

I amazed at the responses to this so far. Just amazed.

Some schools will waive a ticket( for no tag or permit) if you explain the situation.

I really would hate to see something happen where the person's car you were driving recieved some type of consequence for a non paid ticket that you decided to hide and not pay.

Call the school's parking bureau, explain the situation and that you are not a student, the car isn't registered to a student and that you were there to visit and had no place to park..

    Don't be that guy..

Yea I did, I went into the office today and explained it to the guy, really jolly guy but he said all I could do was appeal. The appeal seemed really geared toward students so idk. I kinda think appealing it might have messed me up, they have some more info on me now. IDK. This whole situation is stupid. How can they charge 175 for me parking in an empty parking lot for 10 minutes?

Hopefully they reduce it or drop it so I don't care. I'm getting responses all over the map on different forums, some say I HAVE to pay it and some say I don't have to.

Hum-Benz, yea there was a sign saying I needed a decal, I completely missed it though it was dark out. I asked someone who visits there every single weekend later and he says he parks there all the time and doesn't get ticketed.

I've gotten my truck towed before when I was picking up my girlfriend (now wife) from her apartment in college. It was also on campus. Came down 10 minutes later, trucky poo was gone. So I just went out, partied, and picked it up at 3am from the towing place, handed over my cash, then went and had breakfast. Lessons learned.

Best step is to appeal and see if they give you a break. But as you stated you were wrongly parked according to the signs that were posted. I agree that the price is a bit steep but .Be responsible as you were driving your mom's car as it could come back to haunt her .You know the financial state of the economy so these schools will turn it over to a collection agency .
