Article: AT&T | 809 Area Code and Other Long Distance Phone Scams Basically, it says that your family member or something has been injured, or you won a prize and to call right away. They are foreign (ex. Dominican Republic) and charge $2,500 a minute, they try to keep you on the phone as long as possible. Also, it's pretty hard to drop the charges since YOU made the call. Just an FYI.
Just got a call from an 818 number which I traced back to Burbank California. They called me, I didnt answer and called back and they put me on hold and after 10seconds I hung up and checked online for scams with that area code. The 818 number called me again and left a message, just a guy named Ed to call him back, he knew my name was David. Im worried a little now, calling AT and T to check for outstanding charges. Or could be a guy who has a question about detailing and looked me up
818 is Definitely SoCal. No scam as far as international numbers is concernced. Should just be charged normall minutes :shrug:

809 area code is for Dominican Republic. It used to be the area code for Puerto Rico until the late 90's. Most cell phone companies do not consider DR international because of the large Dominican population on the East Coast. I never answer a phone with an area code that I don't know. I usually check the area code first before calling back (via wikipedia, etc.) Thanks for the heads up bobby
i use whitepages.com and 800notes.com 800notes is great for checking numbers that are problematic and others post experiences with certain numbers
