hey guys ive been checking this forum for about2-3 months.

ive been learning how to detail since i bought my gto , about a year ago.

so far everything has been well.
ive removed massive swirls using adams swirl and haze and a makita rotary lol
ended up with large amount of blinding halograms.

that was about 3 months ago,

so now i own a porter cable and menzer 85rd and po91e.

ive spent a decent amount of money on my new professional. kit,
so far everything has worked out well.

the adams all purpose cleaner , did an amazing job, my engine bay was a wreck.

    now onto my question

i used the 85rd with a uber orange pad.

so far it works well, it removed all of my minor swirls and scratches.

but now there a tiney bit of halograms, i still have deeper scratches also.

i was wondering how can i remove the halograms?

im sure with a sealant or wax it will be covered.

but since im still at the polishing stage i was wondering if anyone had any tips to removing this LIGHT halograms.

should i go over it again with the 85rd? but any special techniques i should use?

or should i finish my entire car with the 85rd and then jump to the 91e ?

i will be sealing with jet seal 109 and waxing with pete's 53.

the 85rd is an amazing polish does the job very well, but im unlucky to have a gto which had a decent amount of deeper swirl scracthes.

any help would be appreciated thanks!

    spryal thanks to you also!

Since you have been learning to detail since buying your GTO, unless you bought it 5 or more years ago, my first suggestion is that you put down the rotay and step away from the Makita!!!!! It is obvious from your post that you have induced those holograms. And, "Covering" them with a sealant or wax is going right down that same thought process...inexperience and taking the shortcut...short-term fix.Think a good DA would be your best bet until you can perfect your rotary skills!

My guess is your buffer pattern is what is causing the holograms, you can't just move the buffer all over haphazardly...

Have you watched vid's of Nica or Dave KG buffing... both have great videos showing impeccable technique.

Also to remove the deeper scratches you need to use more aggressive compounds and pads to remove them, then refine....

Lastly I am not happy with the uber orange pads at all, just don't like them... too hard.

I agree that the uber orange pads are very stiff. But all orange pads are.

    They yellow ones look promising.

holograms are going to happen with using a harsh pad like orange, and with your experience level.

85rd is a finishing polish, and should be used with a finishing pad. I would use your intensive polish with the orange pad, and 85rd with a white/black on the porter cable.

85rd isn't really a good polish for DA polishers though. If you can, pick up 106FA/FF and a white pad.

    i had borrowed the makita
and i dont plan on ever using it again.

it was the only thing i could get my hands on that was free at the moment so i took up the offer.

now i reploshied all those areas, using way better technique then when i had the makita, and it did remove all of the halograms.
although there are newer ones around the middle of the door area where it turns a bit round.

    they are very light though,

if i went over them how would i remove it??

    i am using a porter cable 7424xp.

no longer using the makita lol wont ever also.

I think once you are able to master the rotary, you'll never want to be without it! But, you should spend a little more time with it. I think the additional holograms you are seeing were likely remnants of the previous defects. Continue using the method that removed the initial defects - may take you a few passes. Pics might help!?

as I stated above, use a white pad and 106FF or 106FA. Fully work the polish. That should remove the holograms.

85rd is more used for jeweling, not correction.

And I don't think you can really jewel a finish with a dual action polisher like the porter cable.

the only pads i have left are

    green
    grey
    blue

    and the 91e

should i step up to the 91e once i finish the 85rd over the entire car.

or should i use 85rd on another pad?

also whats the best way to apply 109
    applicator or pc?

    thanks guys

i think i will try 1 more pass over the areas that i didnt like and see where that take me.
worth a shot, it did remove the makita halograms and like mentioned above those are probably the remnants of the makits

I agree with this. Once you learn the rotary, what speeds for which polishes, pressure against the paint surface, machine movement across the paint surface, and knowing when the polish is fully broken down, you will be able to do more correction, and much faster than with the PC.

But if you are a weekend warrior and only polishing your own car, time may not be as important as it is to those who are getting paid for it.

Use 85rd on the grey pad, and see if that does anything.

I really think you need 106FF though, for that little extra bite. 85rd is REALLY tame.

I would never trade my rotary for a DA... if you learn how to use it is the bomb!

well i tried the 91e on a green pad.

and so far it looks good, pretty much nailed and removed all of the medium scrtaches and swirls.

its easier to tell when this stuff is broken down.

im going to make 1 pass over the entire vehicle and then move on from there.

its pretty fair to say that the deeper scracthes that are in my finish will not come out unless i use a more agressive polish which i dont want to do, they have been reduced greatly though by the 91e.

i hope its nice tommrow so i can pull my car out into sun light, but so far im not seenig any of the halorgrams since i made that 2nd pass with the 85rd.

    thanks for all your help

i will take pics once im done polishing.

ok so i hit the door with the 91e
    and everything came out spectacular
    except for again
    light halograms GRRRRRR
    they arent bad
they are really light nothing super major
i had some serious one prior to this they were more like buffer halograms

    anyways
the rear quarter panels on both sides had some real deep scratches
    while the doors didnt
    which i find weird?
i think maybe the paint in that area was much more soft on both sides.
the durability of the gto paint isnt great at all to begin with

i enclosed some pictures to show what im working with and what i did

the last 2 pictures showed what i removed after 2 PASSES
for some reaon i dont feel comfortable doing 1 more pass
i think ill be compromising the clear coat in some way

the door it self was easy to work with and basically 70-80 percent of those scratches and swirels i had left from using 85rd were gone.
    the deeper ones still remain

i am being real picky and meticulous as possible as polishing is real hard work and i do want to get it right or as best as possible.

currently the car looks amazing in my garage even without wax on it, the gloss and reflection is amazing, the menzerna does allot more then polish imperfections it brings the paint out big time.:worship2:

now any recommendations of how i should finish off?

85rd? with blue pad? or grey?
i need one those pads for my jet seal 109

i still have the entire front bumper to do
    roof
    pilars
entire leftside door, mirror quarter panel
trunk and entire rear to do
man this takes allot of work
big up to all the guys that do this daily, its a physical job no doubt \\

    my first 50/50
this is after hitting the door with 1 pass of 91e
the quarter panel to the right hadnt been touched yet
    [IMG]

    panel in the rough
    [IMG]

    after 2 passes
some what of a difference not major but better
not sure if i should hit it again or not looks to deep to be done with the polish i have

Those aren't too deep, maybe something a little more aggressive, SIP?

i just completed what i thought i would never finish.

    overall

i am about 75 percent swirl free.
the other 25 percent is deep scracthes which could be taken out with a more agressive polish
or maybe uisng a orange pad with my po91e

i used a green pad by the way, it was too soft to get the deep scracthes but
just right rnough to elimanate the light swirls completely

i then washed the car with CG maxi suds
that stuff is great, leaves no spotting what so ever

i will detial the interior tommrow and apply jet sea 109 and petes 53

i do have pictures of how everything came out will post!

    thanks for your help

Looks like you are making great headway on your GTO. I would suggest some Menz Power Finish for use with either your orange pad ( for deeper defects ) or with the green pad ( for lighter defects ) Power Finish will finish down as nice as 106FA if you work it long enough. Spread your product on speed 2 and then polish on 5 until it goes clear and you're golden.
