What do you think??

I've asked on a couple of forums and have yet to get a good answer.

One of my clients has finish coming off of the wheels of his car. Primarily, well, only on the lip of the wheels. They wheels are clean and haven't been curbed. For those of you who rountinely service these cars, have you found this to be common?? He thinks this is powdercoat. I believe it to be paint. I've suggested just having the wheels polished and call it good. I'm wondering if this is finish failure or just the design of the wheel subjecting the finish to elements that are eroding the finish. Thing is, it's not all the way around the wheel.

Looks like he ran the isht out of it when the tire was really low.

Yeah, but all four are like this and none of them have signs of being burbed or ever hitting the ground. As you can see in the pic, he runs the p!ss out of the car, dirt road driveway, etc. I'm just wondering if the design overexposes the lip to the elements while rolling????

looks painted lambos never have this prob. did he have them done? and if it was paint looks like when the tires got mounted and in time with some washes the paint came off.

It looks like he got a crappy aftermarket job done or something, look how crappy it is in the inner barrel. That's where most of the heat is gonna be, and the low-grade paint couldn't stand it, then the lip is just from the elements I guess.

    That's my guess. I would say re-finish.

Yep, I thought that too. But, I think there would be some kind of degeneration of the wheel itself - nothing. The only thing that has been compromised is the finish. I think it is for sure paint, not thick enough to be powdercoating. And, no, he bought the car new with the wheels black. I think he should have them polished and call it good!! I think chrome looks cheesy on a Euro car. So, again, I think polished would be cool.

Wow the inner barrels are horrible

If I paid that much for a car I would go straight back to the dealer and demand they replace them for me.

It doesnt look like an error on his end

btw, are my eyes deceiving me or does the finish on the barrel and lip look different from the finish on the spokes?

From the looks of it, it's paint. Powdercoating doesn't just fall off unless it was done poorly (ie wasn't baked long enough/hot enough) as it forms a molecular bond with the surface of the metal and is a VERY robust coating.

The finish has worn pretty poorly on the wheels. But, as you can tell in the pics, this car gets worked: donuts in dirt, etc. This thing has been driven daily in the Colorado snow with gravel and Mag Chloride on the roads!!!

it looks like whom ever painted them did use an adhesive promoter. you must use this to paint the wheels and apply a clear after the color. i have seem so many people custom paint wheels to get color matching and it flakes with in months. it is not the dealer, but rather the company that painted the wheels at fault

Looks like they just need to be refinished... if you can afford a lambo you can afford new wheels!

    Lol...

He drives it in dirt? I'm gonna go cry :( Whenever I hear driving in dirt I think extreme stuff like off roading. I'm sure that's not the case but still.
Next time you get a hold of it, give it a hug and tell it no one will hurt it like that again.

Look closely at the wheels, that is exactly the case. They recently made a video in the car while doing donuts in the dirt. Hee Haw!!!
