oh yeah, dont be afraid to try to cut a deal. My dad and I went to HH Greg's to get the Samsung TV which was on sale and ended up getting another few hundred off the price and had a total price with tax of $2150 and $150 off the stand we ended up getting. (Yeah we are some cheap people, haha) But heck it worked.
+1 Also, don't be afraid to check sites like Amazon - got my last (and current) TV from them, and it was a great overall experience... not to mention, way cheaper than what I could've gotten from a "big-box" store.
You really be surprised to think that big box stores would haggle, but they have been for years if you getting a big ticket item. Also does not hurt when companies pay large commissions, I know Samsung has a 30% commissions on the LED TVs, thus more likley to lower the price a bit to get a deal and now a days even more so.

c32 has pretty much hit the nail on the head, but I strongly advise AGAINST LCD TV's if it's being used for anything more than casual viewing. If you're going to be taking advantage of an expanding B-R collection, and you fancy being immersed in the movie, then you will be making the right decision if you go for the Panasonic Plasmas. Whilst everyone wants to spend the least, again, I'd advise on putting the extra into the G10 panel, and from 8ft away, if you want to really appreciate the extra resolution a 1080p source can provide, you'll be looking at the 50" version. Yes, it costs a lot more, but amortised over say 4-5 years, the additional cost in real terms is not that much, plus you get the benefit of watching your movies (broadcast and disc-based) in a pseudo-cinema manner. Compared to LG/Samung, Panasonic have done a great job with their scaling algorithm, so SD on a 1080p native display is not blocky or unwatchable, plus with the G10 you have the benefit of 600Hz technology, which culminates in motion resolution of 1080 lines, with a 1080p source. The best LCD can still offer, is under 800, so you will see some smearing/judder. The analogy is akin to a camera with a 1/1000th shutter speed, and another with 1/700th - the former will capture a fast moving object perfectly clearly, whereas the latter will have some blurring. Which image would you prefer to be looking at?
