Hey guys, I've got a question.. When claying I understand we're supposed to use detail spray.. Can I ask why? I understand it makes it an ideal surface for the clay to move around in but is it more helpful than a spray bottle full of diluted car wash soap? I mean its costing me a fortune just to maintain my detail spray volume.. Is it ok if I dilute the detail spray?

I dont like to use detail sprays because it leaves stuff behind and dont wanna use my nice QDs for something like clay. I have used soap in a bottle of water and it is fine, I have used DoDo juice born slippery, but now i just use ONR at lube concentration. I know that ONR leaves some polymers behind but they easily wash off after I clay when I use a citrus wash. You should always wash after you clay, so just get a gallon of ONR and you will have PLENTY of clay lube, only use 2 oz ONR per gallon of water, some like to use 3-4 oz ONR/water but still cheaper than QDs Or you could always get Auto-Clay from BH and then you can use water as lube.

QD is used alot as lube because it already has alot of lubricants in them so it makes it good for clay lube, DoDo juice born slippery is like a ultra lubricated solution. It was the best clay lube I have used, get the concentrate it is 10:1, but now I am using ONR just to mix it up.

I plan on using ONR at detailer strength. I used up my riccardo clay lube and using detailer spray is just too experience.

Or you could try Bilt Hamber's auto clay. Apparently it just needs water and no lube.

i use ONR too, and you should spray it down with alcohol afterwards because it leaves behind some polymers that'll interfere with polishes

Hm....i'm guess i'm the odd one out here. I'm not sure what kind of clay your guys are using, but when I buy clay I usually just buy a kit that comes with some QD and I use that for lube.

On the other hand, if i was buying clay and lube separately, I would probably use ONR as well, definitely cheaper than buying a bunch of QD

I don't buy the kits - lube and clay. Just buy the clay and use the ONR. Cheaper and works great!!!

I use a kit. I go to Auto Zone and buy the Clay Magic w/the blue bar. It's usually 12.99 but I can get it for 10.99 sometmes and get two medium cars done and still have some left over. I just don't want to afford Clay. I have to many other things I need and I think it works out really well and keeps the cost down too...

I have used soap and water and found the clay would crumble. I now use ONR and it does not affect the life of the clay and provides excellent lubrication between the paint and the clay and besides, it's very cost effective.

Pretty much what I do, I find that the blue clay magic clay is good enough ,if i get a bit of marring it is ok because i will polish right after anyways. I only clay when I know I can polish right after, or min a finish polish.

Richy, I use ONR, and I add a few drop of Megs #00 High Tech Wash, which is very slick, but offer very little cleaning power. #00 is usually used with wet sending. No issues with clay with this solution, I call it supercharged clay lube. It is slicker then ONR along, and rinses clean.

Some soaps will degrade clay, #00 tech wash will not as it really was made to add lubrication. Reading what supercharged has said about it I got a bottle and used a oz in my wash and it did make a diff in Gold Class shampoo. I will use a bit when I clay next time as well.

I hear ya Buddy & agptael, I usually wait until I see a good deal on the clay bar kits at any of the auto parts stores around me and then i'll go stock up. I try to stick with Clay Magic but i'll get the Meg's or Mothers kit depending on what is on sale.
