I have an old truck to trade in and about 12-15k to put on top of the 4500 for trade in. Does anyone know if this clunker program only applies to brand new cars? My uncle says he's heard stuff on the radio about certified preowned cars as well.
As far as I know this is true. I'm helping my dad looking for a car using the program as well. The new or leased has to be priced at $45,000 or less and rated at least 4 mpg better than the old one (gets a $3,500 voucher). If the new one gets at least 10 mpg better, you get the full $4,500. Just something to keep in mind.
Here is some more info on the program: "Congress has passed legislation that would give car buyers a $3,500 or $4,500 voucher for trading in an old, inefficient vehicle for a new, more-efficient one between July 1 and November 1, 2009! Does My Clunker Qualify? To qualify, your trade-in vehicle must: Be in driveable condition Have been continuously insured consistent with State laws and registered to you for at least one year immediately prior to trade-in Be manufactured less than 25 years before the date of the trade-in Have a combined MPG of 18 or less"
1 of the News Crews in town was at a Stealership showing the Clunkers that have been traded in.... There was a 1984 Jaguar xjs that looked Pristine, now its headed 4 the Crusher....Arrrrgh

I've heard it applies to new cars only.. It makes sense to, in this economic down turn, they want the car industry to start rising some how, so what they'll do is try to get all the new models out as soon as possible and this "Cash for Clunkers" is probably the best way.
It's new cars only and don't let a dealer tell you otherwise. The ones that are advertising it for preowned will give you up to $4500. BUT you will be paying up to $4500 dollars more for that preowned than if you went somewhere else. I call it "smart advertising for the clueless".
