Hi, I was just on another forum and Clever Nickname posted pics of his detail of a ferrari. He showed the picture below and said it was bad respray. My car got resprayed and it looks like that too (blurry). How can I correct that? is that corrected through claying?
Looks like orange peel to me too, common problem with repainting. The bodyshop didn't do a good job spraying and/or didn't bother to take the time to color sand.
Although I agree with JBell, if you have access to a PTG, I would hit it with 2000 grit and then polish it out. Be happy with whatever results you get. Clay is meant to remove contaminants from paint, not to correct poor paintwork.
Yeah that looks to be OP like everyone said. I would take it back to the shop if it hasn't been to long. It could be caused by a few things.. 1. Under reduction and/or air pressure too low. 2. Thinner/reducer evaporates too fast for spray conditions. 3. Excessive film thickness or piling on of heavy wet coats. 4. Improper spray gun set-up. 5. Improper painting technique.
You paid someone else to respray the car, they should be responsible for fixing it if you are not happy with it, not you.
Thanks a lot for the replies guys! one quick question...what exactly is orange peel? is it the blurry effect that is caused by heavy coats? why is it called orange peel? and what are the ways it can be corrected? The reason I kinda want to do it is because I want to get all the practice I can get. I want to buy my PC sometime soon and it will be a learning process to correct this.
Orange peel is the effect of improper painting techniques that produce a finish that resembles the peel of an orange. If you look closely at an orange, the peel has tons of small dimples and it's not smooth. To correct it there's pretty much 2 options. The best way is to have it repainted correctly as orange peel is a result of improper painting techniques. The other way is you can try to relevel the paint surface your self by wet sanding the paint then compounding and polishing. Now this option has it's risks as there are high and low spots in the paint and clear coat. As you try to level the paint you can wind up cutting through the high spots in the clear down into the base coat and still have remaining low spots. At this point you'll have to have it repainted. So be very weary of trying to correct yourself. While it is possible to correct it depends on the severity of the orange peel and amount of paint you have to work with.
To repair it... 1. Compound or polish to reduce surface texture. 2. Or, sand smooth with 1200 or finer grit sandpaper, compound and polish to restore gloss. 3. Or, sand smooth and refinish. To prevent orange peel... 1. Use proper reduction ratio and spray at recommended air pressure. 2. Select recommended thinner/reducer based on temperature, humidity, air movement, and size of repair. 3. Avoid heavy coats and excessive film thickness. 4. Use recommended spray gun, fluid tip and air cap for the material being sprayed. Always adjust the gun for best atomization and balanced spray pattern before paint application. 5. During paint application, hold the gun perpendicular and parallel to the surface. Adjust speed of pass, pattern overlap, and distance from the panel to achieve the desired appearance. "Nearly" every car out today on the road has some sort of orange peel on it. I see it all the time at our shop. Whether it be a new car that a robot painted or just a daily driver the was fixed in a shop. Orange peel usually starts when the first layer of sealer/primer is put down. It just gets worse as you spray your coats if you aren't doing a "good" job. It just looks bad when the last coat of clear is sprayed. Its all about the painter and the environment. When we do show cars or high dollar cars each coat is sanded to a "glass" like finish. As when a robot paints a car its just spraying the paint on the vehicle, no "real" steps are taken in between each coat. Sometimes though I am forced to lay down some sort of orange peel as if I am just painting a certain part on a car and the rest of the car has peel its going to really stick out like a sore thumb.
ohh man i guess im in shits creek then. I don't have a PTG nor can I afford one anytime soon so wet sanding a large area isn't going to be an option for me. As for getting it re-sprayed....it's been 3 months since I got it painted, has it been too long to take it back? Also, it's raining right now but when the weather is nice out I will take pictures of it and let you guys see how it is. Although I don't have a SLR i do have a point and shoot so hopefully you will be able to see. Thanks!
90 days doesn't seem like to long to me. Its really gonna be up to the Shop you took it to, there not gonna be thrilled to see you I assure you, but if they have any Pride in there work and care anything about there reputation they will correct this problem. Having said this, they knew when you took deleivery of the vehicle of there pisspoor paint job. I mean this problem didn't develop overnight. How much did you pay for this Paint Job? Did they Spray the entire car?
I had met with an accident on my drivers side front fender that needed to be replaced along with the rear bumper, and rear and drivers side door. so pretty much all of the drivers side. I paid about $7000 for all parts + labor + everything....(insurance covered it all but still...its a lot of money). my car is a 2009 black dodge charger. im not sure if the orange peel is apparent across the whole side or if its in certain spots...but i do remember one day comparing both sides and I did think it was a bit blurry on the drivers side. I thought it was just my mind playing tricks at the time, i didn't think it would be the paint job.

If they try and give you a Load of Crap, that you waited to long then you need to go see your Insurance Agent and also call the Claims Division. I was tryin to be nice thinking these may be some kinda $500 Backyard Paint Job but I swear to GOD My Daughter could Paint better then those Knuckleheads.... Please don't take this the wrong way but Your Paint Job is a JOKE :sorry:
nah don't worry im not gonna take it the wrong way. Once the weather clears up i'll take some pics and then I will take it back to those guys. it wasn't just a paint job tho...the 7 grand included new doors, front bumper, rear bumper, and 2 new wheels as well. regardless, i was promised an excellent (better than dodge itself) paintjob...so im gonna see to it that I get one.
