i just bought some clay and it does not come with lube. what type of lube can i use when i clay the vehicle.
mequiars quick detail, meguiars last touch, meguiars fianl inspection, ardex water spot remover, fk1 425, ONR, just to name a few.
Depending on the situation, what I mean by situation is that when I'm going to be doing a paint correction I normally use water as my clay lube. If your not going to be be polishing the vehicle after claying it I would use a good clay lube (QD).
Another vote for ONR as well..it's so versatile..if you don't have it yet..trust me on this one..GET IT!!
I use the cheapest QD I have on hand... Right now I have a ton of Mothers Showtime that I got as part of a kit with the old good mothers yellow clay. Once that's out, I'll probably use ONR as it dilutes way down and I have a lot of it. In a pinch I'll use whatever QD I happen to have on hand.
+1 Quick Detailer Using a 1:20 ONR / distilled water solution in a fine mist spray bottle. To remove light, dry surface dust or pollen without causing scratches by applying very little surface pressure, dusting with long strokes in one direction only
I like ONR, Mothers Showtime, Clay Magic lube, and of late really like DP Waterless Autowash as clay lube, diluted a little ... talk about lubricity.
You can get the Clay Magic lube - Auto magic's #49 Body Shine, by the gallon. It's the best I've used and the smell is great. Not a bad QD either.
I always use a good car wash soap - its slippery, and gives a good lubricant to the clay. You also do not have any extra films to remove before polishing and sealing/waxing. The quick detailers are also very expensive and dry too quickly. :thumb:
Water as no lubicity and could cause more surface scratches, a thin film of lubrication (see Detailer’s Clay Lubrication) provides a safety barrier that enables the clay to hydroplane across the surface. In other words, the clay is riding on a micro-thin film of lubrication between it and the paint surface removing the (protruding) surface contaminants by abrasion and encapsulation by the malleable clay. Without lubrication the clay will abrade the paint surface much like a wet-sanding block and will produce significant fine surface marring
