Do I have to register for a GST number even though my sales are under $30,000? What do you guys do when charging customers, cash only or charge GST for the service?
hmm this makes no sense to me. So the first $30K worth of customers no tax and then thereafter I start charging them tax? Seems like If I am offering a service then I need to charge the gst even if I don't make $30k/year, now I am confused again, lol. so far all my details have been cash deals, maybe I should keep it that way, just wanted to be on the up and up
gthal is correct. As dumb as it sounds, your first $30k worth of work is GST free. I would register for it now as it takes a while to set up. That way when you finally run your first $30k through your business account you'll have it ready to go. I'm assuming you are doing this full time are part time leading to full time?
its PT althoug I am doing 3-4 details a week  I have a FT job as well. I don't forsee making more than $30k a year so I assume I don't have to charge the GST, correct?
its not 30k per year...its your first 30k that you make. So if you do $25k this year and $10k next year then year 1 is GST free and the first $5k of year 2 is gonna be GST free. but from there on out you have to charge/pay GST. Again, your GST allowance is a one-time thing and doesn't get refreshed every year.
Are you actually running this as a business? I mean, using a business account at the bank, filing tax returns etc or is it just a cash business?
